Hi, I'm planning on applying to University of Toronto (Scarborough), York university, UIOT and Ryerson university within two weeks. I am specifically interested in doing an honors specialization/major in software engineering, computer science, information technology or computer security. I was just wondering, which program would be better in terms of employment (e.g. would specializing in information systems in the computer science program at U of T be better or would just a major in computer science be better?). Also, when ever I ask people about which of these programs are better, they always reply by telling me what each program is and what you learn, but I want to know what are the pros and cons of each program (i.e. specific restrictions in what you learn in courses and the courses you take). |

With regards to restrictions on what courses you can take - everything there is to know is on the academic calendar page of the university you are researching. For UofT CS this is: http://www.artsandscience.utoronto.ca/ofr/calendar/crs_csc.htm
Apart from that, it's all about what you want for yourself, and what will motivate you to learn the most. In terms of employment, some programs may be slightly better than others, but the bigger factor is always you. The other important thing is whether the program supports co-op work terms or a Professional Experience Year, which can give you an opportunity to gain significant work experience prior to graduating. I know UofT Scarborough and Ryerson have co-op, no idea about the other two. |

As Gandalf says, the question is not "which program is better?" but "which program is better for me?". Naturally people don't really know you all that well, so the best answer anyone can give are some details about any particular program. It's up to you to figure out what matters. |
