Im trying to do a system image backup to my new 1.5TB EXHDD [got it a little while ago] and after it runs for a few hours It gives me an error that says its unable to complete the backup due to a I/O error and it recommended that I ran a check disk [/r], which I did - no errors were returned so I ran the backup again and It still gives me the same error...any ideas?

Is the error on the source or the destination? Also how are you doing the backup (with software, or just trying to drag and drop)

I just tried my portable external drive which I have successfully made other backups onto before and I received the same error again :/

No idea. I am using the backup utility [?] that you have in win 7 Backup - Create system image

exact error -
The backup failed.
the operation failed due to a device error encounter with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK /R on the source or destination volume, and then retry the operation [0x8078012D]

Additional Information:
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. [0x8007045D]

I'm currently running a chkdsk on my computers hard drive.

There is a suggested solution here, you might want to try it out.

...and how did the chkdsk go?

chkdsk - 0 errors going to try /f /r if this attempt at a backup fails
-85% so far*crosses fingers*
Backup completed. And that was the weirdest thing ever....

I would suggest not using the built in backup maker. Built in software is usually lacking compared to competitors. I'd suggest looking into macrium relfect, as it also allows you to build recovery discs for the sake of recovering from a backup. It is paid, but they have a free 30-day trial, and after that the recovery discs and the backups still work fine, you just can't make new backups
