I am wondering if there is a way that I can turn on my laptop while the lid is closed. I ask this because I got a 21.5 inch 1080P LED monitor (stables sales ftw), it is more convent if I have my laptop acting as a desktop while I am at home. I have ran into the minor issue of having to crack open the screen every time I need/want to turn on the computer. Which is a pain.
edit- not sure if it makes a difference but the power button for my laptop is on the right hinge. [Dell studio 1737] |

You may be able to use the Wake-on-LAN feature (available on many modern motherboards) to turn your computer. If you always turn it on at the same time of day, such as when you get home from school / work, you can probably install some program to do that. Otherwise, you could just leave it on all the time. |

No need to mod, just set the laptop to display video on the monitor only and make sure windows isn't set to turn off the computer when you close the lid (a power setting somewhere IIRC).
If you're using Linux (Arch!) like any decent person would it's even easier. You just uh... do the same things... only using your DE... |

@DW
Leaving it on all the time is a a waste of electricity, I do sleep LOL. WOL is kinda too limited because i don't really use my laptop at regular hours.
@md
first part already done ;]
any other ideas?

Just thought of a fancy idea, Why not allow my G15 or mouse to wake the computer -_-...so obvious it hurts
A tutorial for those whom don't know what I am talking about

Ooh, you want to be able to turn it off... that's just odd. Why would you turn a computer off? Then it can't be doing anything! |

It'd do nothing while I'm sleeping anyways so.... that and my parents get really cranky when they find it on and I'm not by it. |

Not sure if this'll work, or if it'll be healthy for it. You'll also need to remove the battery.
Grab something to push the power button down, so it's always pushed. Then either unplug/plug the power cord, or use a cord with a switch.
Edit: Hmmm, actually that might mess up shutdown. Scratch that. |

Put it on suspend rather than off, then wake it up with a piece of
semi-flexible "tonge" and insert it between the lids to press a key.
Not high tech, but effective and cheap.
Might be what you want? |

It seems like a software soultion would work.
I have two racks of servers which i turn on and off remotely as needed with WoL and a script that sends a sleep or shutoff command over SSH.
If you have a smart phone you might even be able to set it up to send the command so you don't need access to another computer.
If your laptop is *nix based you may want to check out the powerwake and powernap command line programs which will send the WoL packet or sleep the computer for you. |
