i was wondering (in uWaterloo) what common places do students hangout, university traditions (like MIT's breaking in to a hidden room), favourite eateries and what not to do for an enjoyable student life. Oh, i got an interconnected room with a friend of mine; high hopes that things will be awesome! |

Make a trek to the 6th floor of MC in the middle of the night, without a map. |

Take on a strange road, watching strange scenery and listening to strange music. |

That's uh, an interesting (and necromantic) first post. I guess that would be a good thing to do once in a while though... |

I like hanging out in Laurier with my friends. IMO,
they have a much more inviting social atmosphere. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Waterloo is full of complete nerds, and while I am one myself, I hate to be surrounded by people talking about games, CS, computers, etc. 24/7. I need a break to have "normal" conversations. But that's just what my friends and I feel. Most people I know enjoy the campus.
Also, we sometimes go to bars/pubs on King Street to blow off some steam. And REV (residence) has a lot of parties. Go to them and make friends. |

Ha, I hear you man -- about being surrounded by people who just can't take a break from geeking. I avoid the drop-in computer labs at my school because they are always full of greasy, stinky nerds fighting about some technology in star wars. Some folk need to learn about 'balance' in life.
So, in an attempt to make this reply not sound too trollish, I would say that if you have "got to do" something in CS in university (at least I think that's what the thread was about), I recommend taking opportunities to break out of the usual group/clique, and socialize with those of a different mindset (eg, English majors). Join a poetry club or something. |
