Out of curiosity, is it common for students to go into university for computer science with only a knowledge of Turing?

Yes it is common for students to go into university computer science with knowledge of only one language. You will also find students coming in with knowledge of many languages and with no prior programming experience at all.

In my experience it's not really important. Everyone starts off with the fundamentals of what a computer is, how it works, the history of languages, how languages work, blah blah blah regardless of their experience.

The more knowledge of math you have coming in the better off you are though!

It helps to have some background, but the point of first year computer science is usually to get everyone up to the same level of experience. That's why some will excel at certain first-year courses, while others might have to put more work into learning the content to catch up.

I went into university (waterloo) with no programming experience at all and I was fine. CS was actually my highest mark in first term.
