Google wrote: Tsunami Alert for New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, and others. Waves expected over the next few hours, caused by 8.9 earthquake in Japan.
What are your thoughts on this earthquake? Do you have family or friends in the area?
Feel free to share your views and information.
I only found out through the message on the Google Homepage...and I think that they did a good job of setting up people finder for those affected and by alerting the world.
Looks brutal, it is washing away the cities like they are lego...destroyed the normal and emergency cooling systems in a nuclear powerplant...and blew up an oil refinery.
Japan is in a state of emergency now. |

I found out about the earthquake through here. Though Google is actually a good spot to put such warnings. I rarely go to Google's home page, since I either use Firefox's google toolbar or Chrome's do-everything bar. |

A very important point here is that Japan is Engineered really well to deal with such disasters. Yes, there are still unfortunate deaths in the hundreds and a lot of damage. But compared to other recent major earthquakes...

Quote:
the Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless.
That was a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. Japan's 8.9 is ~700 times stronger (amount of energy released). |

yeah, the first thing I heard this morning was the earthquake in Japan. Like literally, the radio station I woke up to this morning was talking about it. Pretty depressing actually.
8.9 is crazy, although there were 9.0+ magnitudes before I think. Japan has a pretty technologically advanced infrastructure so hopefully they can recover quickly enough.
RIP to the lives loss |

It's a rather cruel joke. Hard to read, but it says
'Stalker: Shadow of Fukishima'. The image is, of course, the Fukushima plant. The actual game, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, is about the Chernobyl reactor.
Definitely related. |

Fukishima's core hasn't actually had a meltdown, so right now it's a really long stretch to equate the two. |
