I'm going into CS in the fall. I've been looking up various things about the school during my boring summer and stumbled across this:

http://uwchevron.com

Pretty weird. Do any current students know anything about it? Smile

I love their pseudonyms, e.g., a physics problem by "J. Robert Oppenheimer".

Chevron was one of the original student papers at UW until their political views got them shut down, now some people have decided to use the name in their new publication... It's anonymously published and as such SLC has currently banned them from putting their papers there, but you can still find the issues in various places across campus... One place I know on campus where you can definitely find them (and mathNEWS and Imprint) is in MC outside 2065 and 2066, and they're all published bi-weekly (I think mathNEWS and Imprint are one week and Chevron is the next)... Since they started publishing in spring they probably don't have a huge group of readers yet, but it might become more popular in fall depending on what the first years (and other returning students) think about it...

Well, they just can't use the newpaper distribution racks that are installed in SLC; students are free to bring their own copy, read in SLC, and leave the paper on the tables/couches/whatever, for others to enjoy.

Currently, UW Chevron is arguably the best quality student paper publication.

Some universities and student unions respect free press and let there student papers publish what they want. I think you guys should fight to have the restrictions on your official student paper lifted and/or the chevron recognized as such.

At Lakehead for example our student paper, The Argus, has free rein to cover any topic they chose and has an ex officio member on the student union border of directors so that they may fully cover topics relating to the student union. They also frequently cover controversial topics such as sex, porn, wifi, abortion, etc. We also commonly have editorials criticizing both the student union and university administration sent in by both anonymous students and faculty that are published.

I highly suggest that the U of W students do something about there Federation of Students to make there efforts more in line with the needs of Waterloo's student body. The feds board of directors and executive officers are elected by you so demand change or run for the board/office if you need to.

@Tony: Chevron is the best in terms of real content, but I still think mathNEWS will be remain more popular overall

@Dan: I agree that restrictions on the papers should be removed, but considering that the Chevron is COMPLETELY anonymous (writers, editors, etc) it's understandable why SLC has them banned...

@jcollins1991: agreed. I'd still take mathNEWS for entertainment value.

As for SLC, it seems that they are not taking The Chevron seriously... yet

Well, maybe, depending on your point of view. Why can't they allow an anonymous paper? Because they be pressured into censorship? Dan has a valid point about the value of free press. Personally I never understood why Imprint can't even accept anonymous editorials.

Ah yes, Lakehead... the only university where the wifi is more dangerous then the bears. So cool (I kid, I kid.)

Lol I don't read Imprint so never knew that, but ya that's stupid that they won't accept anonymous editorials... I think one of the problems that the SLC might have with a completely anonymous student paper is that if anything happened they wouldn't have anyone to blame... I agree free press is important, but like many other parts of UW, SLC is probably more interested in covering its ass, especially considering the fate of the original Chevron...
