My 2nd choice for computer science is Algoma University and I was wondering about the admission requirements. I don't really have any extra-curriculars yet (still have 2 years). Is it possible to get an admission there without too much focus on extra-curriculars? I have a 93% average overall and am sitting at a 99% in Computer class. Any thoughts about admission requirements at Algoma?

EDIT : I almost forgot, I tried out for sports but didn't make it for anything. Sad

I think that universities look at your marks first, and then your extra-curriculars. Your marks seem to be good right now, so don't fret too much about it. However, extra-curricular activities never hurt, and since sports didn't work out too well for you, try joining things like the chemistry club or the chess team, or better yet, start them!

Anyway, you have 2 years to go, so just be sure not to slack off and join some groups that interest you because in addition to getting some extra-curricular experience, you will also be making new friends who share the same interests as you.

There are no Canadian universities that are seriously difficult to get into. A 93 average will get you pretty much wherever you want to go. There are very few programs that require anything more than that (one well-known example is McMaster's health science), unless you apply out-of-province. Besides, Algoma is a fairly new university, so they're going to have low standards in admission.

Of course, keeping your average high for the next two years may be difficult.

Don't feel pressured to join any particular type of extracurricular activity instead of another (unless you plan to apply to Harvard or something); find something you really like.

I hear you're interested in Algoma. There's a couple of options for their computer science program.

There's a BCOSC (Bachelor of Computer Science), BSc (Bachelor of Science) and BA (Bachelor of Arts)

The BCOSC allows you to do gaming and business systems management - it's more structured along CS courses, whereas the BA has additional arts courses, and the BSc has more science courses.

Just make sure you take University-level English, Math and a possibly a Science.

They won't look at extra curriculars either - just grades.

Make sure whatever you take you're interested in. Same with extra curriculars. Don't join cause you feel you need to - especially if it'll affect ur grades.

I'd recommend contacting Jenn at info@algomau.ca. She'll hook you up with info and maybe a prof to talk to too.
