Hey guys I'm about to go compete in the ECOO competition. My teacher doesn't know much about it... I was wondering if there's any prizes or anything for getting first

Yes there is. I believe that the top two teams in the finals (so, after you qualify from boardwide and regional contests to the finals), you get some amount of money...

I believe Mr.McKenzie will be able to reply with a better and more certain answer...

You get prizes for winning at Regionals, and monetary prizes at finals (for top 3, I think).

At finals there are Future Shop / Best Buy gift certificates for the top three teams (300,200,100 per member) as well as a number of door prizes (50 each.) At regionals there are some token prizes for the top teams in the region as well as door prizes. They change from year to year based on what we can beg from various places.

Since Brian is too modest to say it, I will:

It was because they used Visual C++ on a laptop they weren't used to. Please look up to the Woburn people, and not us. >_>

We have yet to receive the boardwide contest from Mr.McKenzie. He is probably busy with things. Also, I don't think we can make the April 3rd deadline...as registration itself opened day before yesterday.
Off Topic: What's with the uunicorns (ha, take that)?....

OK, to clarify: DMCI beat us by 12 points. 2 were time points, the other 10 were due to resubmission of the cipher question. I was not the one coding, but I was spotting for the person who was coding, and it was such a trivial mistake that I must take half the blame, due to not having caught it.

The time points were indeed due to some stupid things; there was a key to the left of Ctrl on the laptop, which impeded attempts to copy-and-paste; there was project overhead associated with Visual C++; and finally, the output format on the tile question was ideally suited to printf, but I was forced to use cout instead because %lld doesn't work properly on Visual C++.

Also, I am not that modest. I still claim my team is the strongest overall, although DMCI is almost certainly second. Vincent Massey is weak this year; their best coder (Aurick Qiao) did not even make stage 2 last year. (Unless there is someone left at Massey I am forgetting.)

Was that error as trivial as forgetting to rename the input file/switching from 1 test case to 5? I've done that before (which directly led to myself not making regionals last year).

Vincent Massey has plenty of very strong programmers, take a look at the DWITE rankings if you are not convinced. Keep in mind no one from my school wrote the last DWITE because I ran the ECOO regionals the same day.
