Tag Tutorial
Apparently people do not know the full potential of posting and people complain about the posts not being the correct format.
So... Here is a run down of everything you can do in the post!
B: This is the bold button. No explanation needed, works similarly to any word processing program.
i: This is the italic button. No explanation needed, works similarly to any word processing program.
u: This is the underline buttton. No explanation needed, works similarly to any word processing program.
Quote: This is the quote button. When pressed, you can enter anything that a person have said before. Quotes can also be done when making a new post, just scroll down on the new post screen, find the post and click the quote button on the upper-left corner of the post,
List: This is the list button. When pressed it will create, i believe, a bullet in front of the sentence selected.
List=: This is the ordered list button. You can add a number(?) after the = sign to make it a numbered list.
Img: This is the image button. You can add online pictures using this tag. Simply press the button, type the FULL url, and hit the button again.
URL: This is the url button. You can add a link on the post using this tag. There are 2 ways of doing it.
code: | TYPE_FULL_URL_HERE -or- Your_text |
UNDER MORE TAGS
Border: This is the border button. You can create a box all around the text or object you want. Simply highlight section and press button.
Blur: This is the blur button. You can add a blur effect to your selected text. Highlight and click button.
Code: This will allow you to post in any code in simple format displayed in black. Click button, type code, and click again button. (NOTE: A typical indent = 4 spaces)
eBay: This is the eBay link button. Works similarly to an url. Click, type what you want to search, and click again.
Fade: This is the Fade button. This allows you to add a fade effect to your selected text. Works just like blur button.
Flash: This is the flash button. This allows you to imbed a flash image to your post. Put it like this...
code: | [flash width=# height=#]http://flash_image_url[/flash] |
FlipV : This is the Flip vertically button. Pretty much self explanitory. Simply highlight and click button.
FlipH : This is the Flip horizontally button. Self explanitory. Highlight and click.
Footnote: This is the footnot button. Again, self explanitory. Highlight and click.
Google: This is the Google link button. Similar to LMGTFY.com and eBay button. Click, type what you want to search, and click again.
Hr: This is the horizontal line button. When pressed it will create a line that will cut across the entrire post. Works similarly to any word processing program.
Offtopic: This is the off topic button (WHICH NO ONE USES AND IS BY FAR THE 2nd MOST IMPORTANT). Highlight and click.
Search: This is the board search button. Similar to Google and eBay buttons, you click this button and type what you want to search. It will, I believe, search the compsci topics.
: This is the scroll button. This will give the highlighted text a scrolling effect.
Spoil: This is the Spoiler button. By highlighting the text and clicking the button, I think you can hide the certain text from plain sight unless clicked.
Stream: This is the Audio Stream button. Simply Click, type the full audio url, and click again.
Strike : This is the strike button. This gives the selected text a strike through effect. Highlight and click.
Tab: This is the Tabbed button. This places a tab right where you want it, but we are mostly used to the 4 spaces.
Table: This is the Table button. Similar to border. Highlight and click.
: This is the Up-down scrolling button. Gives the selected text this effect. Highlight and click.
Video: This is the Video Imbed button. This allows the person to add any online video to their post. Formatted so...
code: | |
Wave: This is the wave button. This gives the selected text a wave effect. Highlight and click.
Yahoo: This is the Yahoo button. Works similarly to Google. Click, type what you want to search, and click again.
Wiki: This is the Wiki button. This adds a link in your post dirsctly to a wiki topic. Click, type what you want to search, and click again.
Syntax: This is the Syntax button (THE MOST COMPLAINED ABOUT). This gives your code a certain style and colours matching the format of the lanugage you use. This is more complex so here is how you put it...
code: | [syntax="TYPE_YOUR_LANGUAGE_HERE_ex:_Turing"]TYPE_CODE_HERE[/syntax] |
Emoticons: These are the smilies of the forum. Simply click the face you want and it will appear in code on the post.
View more Emoticons: This link will allow you to view all the rest of the emoticons. Click the one you want and close the window when you are done.
Emoticon Creator: This is a custom message emoticon. Follow the guidelines and you will have an emoticon
Color bar: There is a color bar on the right-hand side of the post. You can change the color of your text using this. Simply click on the colour you want.
NOTE: only 1 tag can be used at a time. |

It is so people can link this topic, if they are really annoyed, to the people they want to. |

What's wrong with that one is that it's on the compsci wiki, the existence of which is a mystery to the users that need it.
Personally, I don't see the value of the 'effect' code tags. Only 'functional' tags should ever be used in my opinion (code, quote, url, etc). Color tags should only be used in large, heavily organization-based posts such as tutorials. If people are using color tags needlessly, such as to have their entire post green, it becomes a distraction and, also in my opinion, makes the poster look like an attention whore ie 'look at my post! It's awesome 'cause I wrote it! I look smart 'cause I know how to use color tags!'
Then again, that could just be me, and I'm just a dick. By all means, use your color tags, but I won't like it. |

This is exactly what I was going to write. |

I would agree that formatting tags are to be used for formatting, and preferably in an intelligent manner.
Side note: is there any reason why the font size decreases after the second code block? I assume this wasn't intentional, and I've seen it happen in a variety of posts. Something odd in the CompSci.ca source? |

@DemonWasp, there was a post about that. Just a bug, it's a low priority. |

Oh... Didn't notice that. Besides, not everyone know and goes to compsci wiki (like me for example). |

There should be a bigger link for the compsci wiki or something. That way people will actually know it exists. And they might actually use it. |
