Can someone tell me the purpose of the bit shop (even when there is little or nothing there), the stars (is there a specific way to earn stars?), and the ranking system (How many posts for each rank and how are certain ranks customizable?)?

Man that was a lot to say...

Karma, I kind of get. It is the same with every forum.

Stars indicate the number of years since a user joined the forums.

Bits are a cool number to have beside your name, even if you don't need any website services.

I have no idea what the specific numbers for ranks are, although I'm sure it's up here somewhere (if not, it should be...)

Check the Compsci wiki on Ranks

I do think it would be cool to spend bits on orbs or name colours or some other pointless but pleasant addition.

Maybe just viewable in your profile?

There's a bit shop? Where? *Pulls out rifle*

Wait, found it. Nothing to be alarmed, just some forgotten old piece of code. But just to be sure... *Shoots shop*

Yes, inane colourful additions bought by bits would be interesting. A way to customise your posts besides avatars and signatures.

I wouldn't mind buying them.

I just had a look at the shop and it turns out I have enough bits for e-mail forwarding. Hey, if everyone donates bits to me, I may hit the magical 569231 bits that Dan didn't expect anyone to get and buy myself a website on the server. Kick-ass.

EDIT: my bad, I need 75 more bits for forwarding. And I already have the rune key pendant, maybe I can sell it to someone for more bits.

If you get the bits and buy the item I will give you the service, but just make sure to let me know when you do as it is not automatic.

Edit: Also if any one wants hosting for an open source or computer science related project, we might be able to set you up with some hosting and server related services for free (no bits required :p)

Awh, that takes the fun out of it. I was more hoping for 'Holy crap you made 570 THOUSAND bits?'

Meh, maybe I'll replace my gmail account with a compsci.ca one, it's cooler. When I have 77 more bits.

EDIT: 75!

EDIT AGAIN: Apparently you can't look at a topic in a separate tab while editing a post in it.

Not sure what you mean by that, it works for me.

How many bits are there total in compsci?

I doubt 570 thousand

I might take you up in that offer in a year or so, I'm working on (starting) a long-term open-source project. We'll see what happens.

Depends on if you count negative bits or not.

With negative bits: -4,284,746,386

With out: 249,462

User with the most bits has: 7,307
