After building my ARF Funtana 300 and screwing around with that I am quite happy with how maneuverable and fun it is to fly. The only thing that I can't do yet is a rolling circle and hovering, Just for fun...I asked my comp engineering teacher as a part of the robotics part of the class, if I could build a plane. He immediately said yes WOOT. (he is a former pilot and he has also designed some aircraft...cat is in the bag)

SOOOO

After taking into consideration of what I wanted in a plane (long flight, maneuverable and fun to fly) I decided on making a glider. WHICH IS JUST PERFECT. At my local hobby store there was all of the electronics needed for a plane for $100 (brand new...it would have run me almost $400) After getting all of the foam and parts i needed, i walked out with only spending $200 which is very decent.

If anyone is curious the parts are:
1 AXI 2204 brushles motor
4 E flight micro servos
1 speed controller (i matched it to the motor forget the spec)
2 CF rods
2 .36 piano wires (used as pushrods)
servo horns
hinge tape
1 2 cell Thunder Power Li-Po battery (730 mah)
1 3 cell " " " " "
1 4 channel reciever
2 sheets of 3mm White Depron

yea lotsa stuff

Anyway

I am scratch building the plane if anyone didn't already notice. The design that I am basing the plane on is from a old balsa and paper glider called the Racer 545 Kingbird from White Wings.

after I am done scaling up the dimensions and done cutting (I hope I grabbed enough foam) ill post some pics

p.s
If anyone is wondering....
1) Yes this is now a ISU for my
2) Yes I can fly Rc planes
3) Yes I have a small electric plane flying license
4) NO Chuck Norris didn't have anything to do with this.

The issue I see with this is that this has little to do with robotics. It is largely pre-programed and the mechanics are roughly the same for every plane (my dad makes/flies model planes, so I know a bit what I'm talking about). You're really just assembling an electronic kit within your own wing/tube design. None of the course-relevant bitz are your creation.

lol I know...thats what makes it great..

also the part that you missed...you have to set up all of the electronics...otherwise they don't work...so i have to do some thinking.

sorry i forgot to post this earlier, but my glider idea didn't work out i couldn't get sheets of foam big enough to accommodate the wing, so instead I am building a plane called the Akro...

all that is left to do is program all of the electronics and attach them to the plane and attach the push rods to the surfaces.
