I dunno how you interpreted that, but it looks to me like Linux is by FAR the most used OS on supercomputers.

Just an img link so's nobody has to click;

EDIT: okay, link didn't work...maybe because the image is an svg file. Ah well.

Yeah, interpretation fail. Nobody who wants speed out of their computer tries Windows.

In fairness, XP isn't too bad. Vista is about as slow as it gets though...

Ubuntu with fluxbox instead of gnome is really fast, no matter what hardware you're using. It's just not that pretty.

XP is still not supercomputer material. As far as I know, it doesn't run without a GUI (probably because it doesn't have any CLI worth starting up), which means it's wasting precious resources.

Windows will probably never be suited to run on supercomputing systems - it's heavily oriented to user desktops, with some afterthoughts towards servers.

windows is the tiny darker blue line between unix and linux. not sure on how to read the graph though, unix has the most area, but linux is in the higher numbers. anyway, windows looks to be one of if not the least used os for supercomputers according to the given graph.

Is this a % vs. time graph?

According to the proper Wikipedia page (please link this in the future), the image shows the portion of supercomputers running each operating system, with data points on a per-year basis.

It shows that while supercomputers used to run UNIX for the most part, Linux has recently taken over. BSD use has fallen off in recent years, and neither Mac nor Windows has ever been a serious competitor.

Please think before you post. Or at least double-check what you're posting.

ecookman, would you happen to be colour blind? It appears as though Linux is absolutely obliterating every other OS on that graph.

Why would you put Windows on a super computer? It's supposed to be fast and not BSOD you know...

lol sorry, on my moniter the windows and unix look to be the same color. after changing some settings...oops

but yea. Running windows on a SC seemed stupid to me. Just like everyone has said.

I just figured I'd point out that there is a special edition of Windows called Windows HPC specifically tailored to this sort of application.

That being said, it's likely not as customizable and definitely not as cheap as Linux.
