I'm using an almost 2month old vista laptop with 4GB of memory (i never wanted to buy vista, but my parents bought them for me as a birthday present when I wanted to try Mac >.>)
Now and then, explorer.exe takes up nearly all the memory on my computer causing my computer to freeze and I have to force it to shutdown, it just started to happen in these recent days, and happens when I browse through folders too quickly on the computer, (if I just never touch files on my computer, and just play games, browse internet, MSN, it won't happen) i don't know what's causing it, and i'm 99.999999% sure that I don't have virus on my computer. All the software i've installed are from legitimate sites, and I have the added protection of the trial version of norton internet security.

My question is what's causing explorer.exe to take this much memory? I have googled this, and there seems to be other ppl with similiar problems as me, and there seems to be no solutions to this....
and just what kind of code is in explorer.exe to make 4GB of memory?
if (user clicks too fast)
{memory.reserveAll();}

I think it may be just a glitch with Vista's explorer. That's why they rewrote it from scratch for Windows 7 (or so they claim). If I were you, I wouldn't even attempt to fix it because there would probably end up being another problem. Download the latest build of Windows 7 from Microsoft and install that. It works until even after the release. And you can upgrade it to the final version as well when you buy W7.

Or you can download the RTM version of Windows 7 Ultimate off the Pirate Bay... I won't link to it because I'm pretty sure this site bans that site, but you can find it Wink

@andrew. nice quote!Very Happy

Or switch to Linux Wink

Thanks saltpro. Yeah, download the RTM from a torrent and install that. If you are daring enough though, try Linux. Linux is way better than any Windows versions including 7.

But for certain compatibility reasons I just dual booted - Windows may suck, but it is compatible with most files (there are obvious exceptions).
