I was wondering if anybody had any info., or experience, with going west with a Bachelor's Degree. Ideally, I would get my Bachelors in CompSci in Waterloo, then move out west to B.C. (Vancouverish) and not have to do university all over again.
Also, same question for moving to the states. (USA).
Thanks for any info you can share. |

I've kind of lived this in a sense. I graduated in 1997 from Waterloo with my Double Honor's Bachelor of Mathematics with majors in Computer Science and Combinatorics & Optimization and got my first job over in Seattle. I went into the US under a TN visa in 1998 and was changed to a H1-B when the residency rules were changed on a TN which couldn't be used to count time for becoming a lawful permanent resident a.k.a. "Green Card" holder. I should have gotten where I worked to start the paperwork after a year of working in the U.S. but I didn't and so I had to move back to Canada once my visa expired at the end of 2004 as there is a 6 year limit for how long a H1-B can be held. I did switch companies once in the US when I had 10 months left because where I worked had basically gone broke to put one way. After coming back to Canada, I worked for a small company in Calgary for a couple of years and am now still in Calgary working for a company called SMART Technologies. They aren't a small company as there are over 1,000 employees and techies work in at least a couple of different departments, Information Systems and Product Development being the big ones.
I don't have any experience working in B.C. though I did have an interview or two in there but didn't get those jobs. If you want to go work in the States and get in under an H1-B, after a year of working get the company to start the green card process would be my suggestion. |

wow. thank you. I am so glad to hear that I really can go abroad, at least to the states. I bet I will do just fine with BC, if I can go to the states. |
