Which of which is the best nowadays?
My parents came up to me with the question the other day, and I was actually clueless. I'm not really running anything these days to protect myself from all the tracking cookies I always get. I'm familliar with the free tools like AVG, Avast, etc. However, my parents aren't computer-savvy so they'll need the cute buttons and lag to make them feel safe, pricetag as well.
The guy at the local shop said Kaspersky is the best. Upon searching I found it's good enough for a small business. Though is it worth the 70$ pricetag? Kaspersky isn't renown for it's firewall.
So I'm wondering what would be the best bet for a family pc (free and otherwise)? |

None of them work against the latest threats, which means you need to be proactive in securing your computer anyways; which in the end makes them all worthless. |

I use Avira Antivir Personal to scan certain downloads, which has only found one issue something I probably wouldn't have downloaded
I don't know why it updates almost daily |

the best anti-virus is linux but I would recommend AVG, the forums are pretty useful and it's free |

Of the stuff you can buy on the shelf, Kaspersky is the best. |

If you're looking for cute buttons and Lag, You definitely want Norton. It even comes with a large yellow bar taking up space on your taskbar.
If you want something useful, free is probably your best bet, however I've also heard good things about Kaspersky. And I suppose as much of a resource hog as Norton is, it is at least functional. |

Any of Norton, McAfee, or Trend Micro(PC-illin) would be my suggestions for something that is an all-in-one package with a price tag if one wants that name brand and price to be what makes them feel safe.
I'm now on Avast for a couple of my machines with the other running a subscription of PC-illin which was bought when I got the machine as it was initially intended for a roommate. I used to have AVG but found it would hang my machine at times that I didn't really like. Course when I put Avast onto my laptop that had Norton, it found a few trojans that Norton missed which kind of ticked me off in a sense as the Norton was still supposed to be good for another month when I yanked it off my laptop.
For a family PC, I'd be more concerned about what kind of browsing configuration they run and what kinds of protection does it have from various threats as I'd be tempted to expect various script attacks and spyware programs from that to be where a few tools like NoScript and AdBlockPlus can be really useful in Firefox though there should be similar things for other browsers I'd think. |

I've been using Avast for a while now on my computer, my sister's computer, and my grandma's computer and I've had no problems. It detects all the viruses we've come across just as good as or better than the stuff you pay for (Norton, etc.). I would suggest you use Avast, but if you parents are like my dad and like the lag and brand name then get Norton. |

Thanks guys. I'll get them to try Avast and see if she'll allow me to put on a AdBlock. If she doesn't like it then they can buy Kaspersky if they really want.
One more question, I've heard of Nod32. Mainly my school uses it. Is it mostly for businesses and overkill for a house? or is it alright for personal use? |

I know someone that uses Nod32. I could see it being logical if one wants to pay a little to get some protection, though likely not much better than the other stuff. Don't forget that if you pay for some software, there may be an annual subscription tied to it. Don't forget where most of the viruses and other baddies come from is in downloaded software from one place or another. |
