hey guys,

I decided to set up the sdl library on windows so I could show my teacher. It was previously compiled under Linux. I'm using Lazyfoo's instructions, but they don't really make sense. Apparently I'm supposed to download a .tar and extract it. I though .tar's were for linux and .zip were for windows. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Both file formats work on both. Secondly, tar is just an archival format (lumps a bunch of files into a single file) whereas zip is a compression scheme which also allows for archival. In fact, a common use is to zip a tar file - this results in the common .tar.gz extension. See the Wiki page for more information.

For the actual problem, just find an untar utility for Windows that you like.

ok, thanks DemonWasp. I found an untar utility I like, it's called 7-up, it's free and a small download.

7-zip is the best. It's clean, lightweight, opens almost anything, and 100% free.
