I think you can find copies of the 7000 built on bittorrent, no longer for free from Microsoft. It was yesterday though.

The new Taskbar is a substantial improvement by virtue of copying a lot of ideas from the OS X Dock.

Otherwise it's basically a polishing of Vista. Don't expect it to change Windows at a fundamental level, but if you have to deal with Windows, it'll make life somewhat less onerous.

Windows 7 running natively on my MacBook Pro 4.1:

So far, the Windows 7 experience has been pretty good. I've had no trouble and it uses the Vista drivers I've used before. It boot up and shuts down way faster than Vista, almost XP speed. IMO, it's pretty stable too except when I tried it on my old computer, I install Win2K GFX drivers and then I launched Media Center and I got a blue screen. Other than that though, Windows 7 has been great.

Did they give you the option to download a 64 bit version? Or just 32 bit for now?

Also am I the only one who is disgusted by the latest Window's menu bar style? The "paste" and "select" options for Paint in wtd's screenshot are ugly, cluttered, and large. I know this isn't Windows 7 exclusive, but, really, ugh.

It's not perfect, but I actually like the ribbon. Also, to Paint's credit, it now makes the option to save as something other than Bitmap much more obvious.

Darn you and you're non-virtualized graphics card! I have a 9600GT sitting here doing me no good in VirtualBox.

That sucks. The eye candy is one of the things that I actually liked about Vista. You could set up a dual boot or triple boot setup though. If you're using a Mac, you should install it in Boot Camp if you don't already have a Windows installation. If you already do, just GParted or something the resize the Windows partition and install Windows 7 in a new partition and use rEFIt to triple boot. If you're using a regular PC then just partition it and Windows 7 will automatically add entries to other Windows OS's in the boot loader.

And I'd think it'll be an improvement over Vista, although since I don't use Vista for anything "programmer-like" I don't run into problems that often.

I've tried the Windows 7 beta on an older graphics card and also in a virtual machine and I think if the Aero effects are off, it's slow. The Aero effects somehow speed up the loading of windows and stuff. If you have the extra HDD space, set it up to dual boot.

When Aero kicks in, the UI is hardware accelerated, so yes, ironically the more complex UI is more responsive.
