If you've read a newspaper, or heard the news on the radio or television, you understand that the economy is going on a rough ride right now. Companies are downsizing, going into bankruptcy or closing down.

What does this mean to you? Your employment opportunities may be reduced.

How can you be successful? You need to put forth extra effort to secure your Co-op job for 2009. Make changes to your resume and update it; rework your cover letter for each position that you apply to; turn your portfolio into the best representation of your skills; practice your interviewing skills with family/friends/on your own and network. Spend time over your break speaking with anybody you come in contact with and let them know you are looking for work related to your program of study.

Now is the time to be flexible. When Co-op jobs are posted, don't take yourself out of the running for the job based strictly on wages or location or benefits or skills or qualifications. Look at the skills and qualifications you have and build on them. Be flexible when it comes to wages and location. You want to secure your Co-op job early in the term so you can focus on your academics.

Be positive, motivated, and willing to learn. These are the three qualities that all employers want from their employees.
