I currently have bell high speed connection (~$40/month) with around 3600kbps down/640 kbps up. I use Dynamic DNS so a static IP isn't required. I'm planing on upgrading the server and frankly no dedicated hosting has computer specs I want for a reasonable price (almost all > $300/month). I want to build my own server, but I need a fast internet connection for upload. Bell has business optimax and optimax 16 for (~$110 and $90) but I don't know what the actual upload speed is. I'm budgeting close to $100/month and stretching to a maximum of $150 if there is a large performance boost.
Any recommendations? |

Home ISPs realy are not ment for hosting servers, infact some of them even disallow it in there ToS or ToU.
What you plan to use it for does matter alot however, it is is anything imporant that needs constant uptime and realiablity you almost have to go deadicated. Good deadicated companys have datacenters with backup power, reduented uplinks so, and fast contenctions to the backbone of the internet.
As octopi pointed out VPS is also an option. VPS is a virutal private server where you basicly are sharing a decidated server with other users but it looks like you have the hole thing to your self from your view.
CompSci.ca uses http://corenetworks.net/ witch has decidated servers start at $30/month and has a 10mbits or 100mbits (for $10 more a month) connection. There transfer starts at 1TB/month and goses up with the plan, or you can get unmettered and a slower speed. They let you install any OS you want over there IPKVM or there are a few they will install for you. The only problem is they are in the USA but still reavltily close to toronto from a world wide perspective. |

The thing about consumer level ISPs is that they don't want you hosting servers. It sounds like co-location might be a good option to consider. |
