It seems the integrated sound on my motherboard has decided to pack it in. As far as I can tell the hardware still works enough for the computer to detect it and act like it's working, but I don't get any actual sound output. Very annoying.
Incidentally, this happened when I turned the computer off to install a second video card. This allows me to do silly things... very silly things... (see screenshot).

Lol, some of my games are capable of temporarily disabling my sound card, after which I have to reboot a get sound working again.
What's exactly silly with that screenshot? is it the wideness? I'm sure you don't have a screen that wide, must be something silly...But then, I am not a mac user yet, so maybe the wideness is normal.

This may sound stupid, but did you try reinstalling the drivers? A lot of people I know have hardware problems ablnd try everything only to find out that it is a driver problem. If it is not a driver problem, I would just go and buy a cheap Creative sound card.

I actually solved the problem by removing the second video card. I think it may have been some sort of weird hardware issue... which makes sense given that the computer has quirks. Turning it on after removing the video card caused such a spike it tripped my UPS and surge protector. Methinks the motherboard is a wee bit fubar'd.
Incidentally, taking out the video card means no more tripple head. Which is fine... the third display meant dropping hardware acceleration on all but one display and lots of other issues.
And linux != windows; there are no drivers to reinstall. They are all part of the kernel (with few exceptions) and so reinstalling them means a new kernel.

Maybe you ran into some exotic IRQ issue?

I didn't know Linux worked like that. I am a Linux noob. I just know that when I first installed Linux, I had to use restricted drivers (the official drivers) to have full GFX acceleration.

Shows how much I know. 3 LCDs? I only have 1! That should be nice for gaming, if your games support multiple monitors (does Linux even have games?). Would be sweet for FSX. I still don't see what's wrong though (knowing nothing at all about Linux except that I'm going to use it when I get my own PC)
