Anyone happen to know how much voltage a typical PC can provide from its parallelport... sadly I do not have a working voltmeter =(

I believe that everything in the computer (except lights if you have a clear lit case) runs on 5 volts or less. I know there isn't enough to run 2 LEDs in the same output, at least.

Apomb's right, about 5 volts. However, it depends on which pin, since most of them are signal inputs. If you want consistent voltage without worrying about any software negotiation or chips needed, look at usb pin-outs. And google that term there for better information.

it's the current you can source/sync that matters much more then the voltage (which is 5v). Most parallel ports will do ~10mA tops.
