I got a QX6850 unopened brand new. I got it from my Intel ties for $239 plus tax and they go for 1k outside. I need cash so I'll sell it for $400 if you guys want.

I'll ship it no charge if you guys live far or if in the GTA, I'll just drop it off at the house. Just a thought...

What socket does it fit?

EDIT: Now that I've checked it out, it seems it is not a laptop cpu, oh well.

Completely noob question, but does this CPU clip in like a card or does it solder on?

Of course, I won't be buying it (I don't have a computer that my parents will let me modify...or one worthy of this chip...)

I would imagine, given what I've found, it is a slot card, it goes in by just pressing it in, the clamping.

Holy crap u got a QX6850 for 240 bucks??!! That's some crazy connections you got there. That would make one crazy ass gaming rig. Unfortunately being a poor university student means I don't have any money for such a rig. You could always sell it on Ebay, but personally, I just hold on to that thing, unless you can get another deal like that.

It seems that it would fit my laptop (assuming it is a LGA775 Socket), tho i am not sure if it would be worth $400 for a 0.3GHz speed and less then 300MHz FSB imporment or if i would want to attmpeted the upgrade my self.

Any idea how much heat it generates compared to a Q6700?

In terms of heat generation I'm not too sure honestly. Check out some reviews I'm sure they mention all that stuff. Again I haven't opened it up for selling purposes. I'd also rather not sell it on Ebay and I'd rather sell it to you guys. I'm sure I could make 500 easy off Ebay but I've always had problems with them. And yes it is LGA775 and putting it in should be really easy.

Either way this chip got some great benchmarks so it is a very powerful chip. When I was looking at the benchmarks, one of the most impressive things was encoding time for any mixers or editors out there.

I have a 4 year old computer. It's not bad thought with P4 HT 2GHZ, 1GB ram, upgraded the vid card to an X800. However, for me to be able to use the CPU I'd have to buy a compatible MOBO that takes LGA775 and it really would be a waste since my RAM sucks (DDR1) and the graphics card is messed. Really not worth it. But the 239 seemed like too good of a deal to pass up so I think re-selling it for $400 is fair.

I would buy it, but I'm short on cash.

Well here's an update. I'll be getting the Quad around August 7th. If you guys are in the GTA I'll be happy to drive it over to you guys if any are interested.

Wtf how the hell is the price so low? I'd buy it if I didn't recently buy Core2Duo 3.0 :/

Pretty much every place I've seen, the Intel Quad extremes go for 1k+

I'm it costs far less for them to manufacture. I work for Staples and if you work in any computer department (Best Buy, Futureshop, etc...) then you can join up on the site called:

retailedge.intel.com

They have a lot of awards and every year they have these purchase plans for us that are pretty awesome. Last year was a C2D E6600, Intel MOBO (don't remember model), and a Windows Vista HP for $239.

Now, you need to send in your pay stub as an employee verification to get the deals but they have these conferences every quarter which are pretty awesome and no verification is needed for that. Just make an account on the site and just put yourself as some associate of a store (they only verify this if you try and buy something). Once that's done, you can sign up to be part of these events. The events are held in different places each time (all in the Toronto area). Last time was Dave and Busters and they gave us some free stuff, gave us the low down on all the new Intel products (Sony was there too), and raffled away a laptop and some quads. We got free dinner and a dave and busters 20 dollar card to have fun there. So you guys could actually go, get some free stuff and possibly win a quad or a laptop. And hey learning about their quarterly plans is cool as well. Now, the next event is actually this thursday at the Scarborough Colliseum. Starts at 7 where they start the conference, then the raffle, and then at 10:30 we get a free screening of Dark Knight complete with snacks and drinks. If you guys hurry, you MIGHT be able to sign up in time for event.
