basic build your own motherboard

does anyone have a link to a build your own motherboard site? It is a task I have wanted to undertake for a while but until now I have not had the funding.

I'm going to assume you mean assemble a computer with individual parts...and not actually build your own motherboard, because that would be silly.

it would be sweet to try and "build your own" motherboard using breadboard such, ive seen a few pictures of them on the net but its definitely way too complicated for me still.

that would be pretty intense, buy like all the individual chips and use like a plasma whatchit to put it all together...sick

Edit: but wait, are motherboards layered, or is that just chips?

even if they weren't, you can't put together a modern motherboard by hand. As jernst said -- use a breadboard for a very basic chipset. Isolated wires are "layered"

It's aucatly not as hard or expensive to make silcon bords (not sure what there name is) as some might think.

The high school i went to in grade 12 had the ablity to draw up a circutle board on a computer and then manufcator it by printing it on a light senstive board, exposing it to intense uv light, then dumping it in an acid tank. It deftaly was not even close tot he qaulity of boards you see in computers but it worked if you could mange to soder everything on it in the small space.

It would probly cost you a few thounsad for the same equipment and more for suplies to make the bords.

The hard part would be desinging it, you would need alot of computer engering and/or elertical engering knowalge. Then even if you manged to make a desing, have the money for all the chips, soder them all on and get it working you would still need to program alot of the chips in a low level langue like aseembly.

It would be a masive under taking and you would need alot of knowalge to pull it off but i think it is at leat posible.

man, that is definitely very cool. If I go into engineering and ever have the extra money lying around i just might try it, just for the fun of it.

Like that thing those kids are doing in the states where they throw tennis balls at each other's crotches. Probably funner than building a motherboard.

yeah the one i saw pictures of was something ancient and probably a reduced instruction set or something, i can't even imagine doing anything modern in that way

If your really into that kind of stuff you might be interested into reading a bit about systems-on-chip, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and networks-on-chip in the future... they're kind of the whole package condensed down into a single chip. Seems kind of related and I'm kind of involved in some research in that area so I thought I'd give a shameless plug for it haha

At school, we printed our own motherboards, not for anything near as complex as an entire computer though, just basically a board to mount a logic analyzer chip, sine wave generator,logic probe, switches, l.e.d.s, etc.
