Alan Turing was not the inventor of Turing, like probably most people on this site think... |

you're right...many people have that misconception. The language 'Turing' was named after Alan Turing... |

I have to go with 'other', because there are simply too many great names missing; Babbage, Lovelace, Von Neumann, Huffman, Church, Ullman, Shannon, Hamming, Dijkstra, Backus, Hoare, Thompson, Ritchie, Hopcroft, Karp, Chomsky... Those are just the names that I can think of at the moment...
I don't think it's really fair to say any of these men and women is necessarily a greater computer scientist than the other... They all worked on a large variety of very different and very important problems. Shannon can be thanked for all kinds of work in information theory and telecommunications, the computer I'm typing this in on is based on Von Neumann architecture, Dijkstra did important work on graph theory and helped develop ALGOL... And this ignores the important work done by Mathematicians, many of whom these people started as. |
