Is it possible to reformat an iPod without using iTunes?

My iTunes can't seem to detect my iPod for some reason.

can you access it through other means? I think Ubuntu used to to recognize iPods out-of-the-box.

Ah yes. I forgot I have an iPod Classic so... In any case I'm sure a magnet could wipe Flash ROM, magnets are the answer to all questions. Well if you read Make Magazine that is. All I need is a rare earth magnet, a tube of toothpaste and the popes hat.
