Those of you that are obtaining degrees in Computer Science, or already have one, what are you planning to do once you obtain your degree (or what do you do now, if you already have it?) I'm only in first year, but I like to think of the possibilities. I'm hoping to raise my marks to get back into co-op, so I can get jobs in the industry, so I know whether or not I want to work, or go into academia. I'll probably end up going into academia, unless something happens that turns me off to school, or I want a break from school. *shrugs* I'd also like to see if anyone knows of possibilities beyond development and game design.

What about you guys?

Edit: If I do end up working, I'd prefer to develop in a Linux environment, if at all possible, lol Razz

I'll be doing my masters after graudation.

Beyond development and game design is probably consulting. Although unless you are a security specialist I haven't heard of computer scientist doing consulting. Possible though.

I'm working as a consultant this term.

After grad I want to start up my own company, and later sell out to Google / Yahoo / eBay. That is... if I manage to graduate before Bubble 2.0 bursts Wink

What kind of GPA do you need to get in to graduate school for Comp Sci program in Canadian Universities?
Dan

70% in an acreaded canadian university science or math program with the requered compsci corses is noramly the min for grad school in ontario.

For non canadian universitys there is noramly a diffrent average and requerments. Also you need to pass a english langue effescney test if your university of intsrtuction was not in english.

Also even tho 70% is noramly the min, it may be calcuated on only math, or core corses and to acuatly get in you noramly need to have some what higher then the min as space is alot more limited then undergrad.

Some programs also requer letters of recomendation form profesors.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Can you translate the percentage to the GPA? I think most program states minimum of 3.0 but the average gpa of the entrants vary according to the school and also GRE and personal experience, etc.

Does your transcript have percentages on them instead of letter grades? our school uses the A=4, B=3, C=2

you take your GPA, divide it by the max GPA, and you get a percentage value.

so if your GPA is 2.8 and the max possible GPA is 4.0, then your average is 2.8/4.0 = 70%

Lakhead gives a few overall numbers witch are Total Earned Credits, Total Grade Points, Cumulative GPA

Total Earned Credits is the number of creidts you have where 1 credit is a full year corse or 2 1/2 year ones

Total Grade Points is the sum of % you got in a class * how many credits it was worth

Cumulative GPA is total grade points / (credits earned + credits you whould have eraed if you did not fail), this comes out to be a % witch i found odd as most places do not have there GPA as a %.

As tony expained a 4 point GPA can be coverted to a % GPA simpley by divding it by 4. Noramly A = 80% and up, B = 70% to A, C = 60% to B, D = 50% to C and F is aything between D and 1%. 0% is normaly reservred for achdmice dishonsity or some other kind of masive failur. Lakeheads transcripts also have letters by there %s to indate things like P is for P, F is for failur, I is for incomplet and a bunch of other ones to indicate how you passed or failed a corse.

I am very agisted the ontraio high school system of giving only integers from 1 to 4 as it removs alot of the acoresy from the grades.

so I'm still deciding on whether to go into software engineering or computer science, so what kind of jobs are there for both? Because it seems that with either degree, you can pretty much do the same job (moreorless) so what are the differences?

If you have a certain job in mind, that you want to pursue, one program might be a somewhat better fit over the other. Then again, the University is a lot about the process, not just what you learn.

Still though, there's a brief overview of the related programs.

I'm considering grad school as well. Lately I've been interested in machine learning, but my interests will probably change by the time I can apply for grad school.

Eventually, I would like to be part of a start-up.. Small companies have always appealed more to me than big ones.
