if they don't have a WEP set up, there's a chance they don't have a router password either. Just use the default admin password, and reconfigure their wireless router to your liking.

Just don't do this in the states, lol.

Also make sure you change there admin password, to something they won't think of, that way they can't remove your port mappings.

People [uneducated/unconcerned] will often leave the default settings on their router, including the username and password.

I'd suggest you start with D-Link/Linksys. Or you can try searching the SSID if they didn't change that either.

if they have a web interface to authenticate (as oppose to HTTP authentication), then it will list the make of the router right on that login page, heh.

If you do have physical access to the router, you could reset it yourself.

Don't muck around with that. Seriously. Best case scenario you just won't be able to do it, worst case scenario you're making someone else's job a pain in the ass for what? Some anime/music/games?

There's an acceptable use policy for using school computers. This leaves the gray area of ethics and enters "Hey, what the hell are you doing?" suspensions and stuff.

fast speed potential. If every student was grabbing an HD copy of whatever during classes, trust me, it would not be very fast at all.

Besides, as soon as the school gets hit by an "over the bandwidth limit" fee, there will be unreasonably strict policities in place.

Schools in Ottawa at least are all on their own fiber WAN (maybe not all, but definitely most; especially highschools). There is a rediculous amount of bandwidth on the WAN; not so much school LANs, which tend to be 100mb or 10mb. The gateway for the WAN to the internet is also heavily monitored; there is even (or used to be) a continuously updated graph on one wall in the IT office showing what percentage of the bandwidth was being used for what. File sharing is apparently already a problem

It's also worth pointing out that attempting to hack any school computer is probably going to get caught. And with the punishments ranging for a ban on using computers ever to expulsion from the board... it's best simply not to try.

I know someone at school that plays doom during class ans the teach lets him. and I use FF Portable on my flash drive at school because I know IE7 is slow, insecure and just has to many errors. And the LAN tech being a good friend helps as well.

The story about the kid being suspended is a hoax. Though given some of the retarded policies/actions in schools of late it really wouldn't be surprising if it did happen.

even if this instance of the story is a hoax, readin the comments on reddit and digg threads around it show that it could easily have been true at some other school.

I find that school staff, policies, etc. vary to a large degree. At one of the high schools I attended, I was entrusted to configure security policies, and to disassemble hardware to take out CMOS batteries, after some douch of a student has put up a BIOS password onto a bunch of computers in a lab.
