I've been meaning to try and find time to do this patch so I can add custom themes to win xp but I've been hearing of a lot of stories about peoples computer's messing up because of the patch. I'm just wondering if doing this patch is safe or if it is kind of hit and miss with some computer's because I don't have the reinstallation disk for win xp and I don't want my only computer to crap out on me and I don't have the money to buy a new one. Any help or suggestions would be great.

I haven't had any problems with it. Look up the Neowin uxtheme patcher. As I recall it's just a simple install (you probably need to reboot for changes to take effect, as usual). Don't take my word for it, but I would think that in the worst case scenario you could at least use a Linux LiveCD and replace your patched uxtheme.dll with the regular one.

If you're still worried, just think of it this way: most themes available for Windows XP are awful anyway.
