I whont to get our CompSci.ca team going again for the world community grid. They now have fun things like team chalanges and a way better client for running it.

For thos that do not know the WCG is about donating your unused cpu time to chariable causes like trying to cure aids, and other things. Many research programs that whould befnite man kind do not have the resouces or money to process the vast amount of data or simuations they require. So you can download a client that will work on processing a few data sets and then upload them back to the grid. Poeleop can make teams and you get points for the amount of data you porcess and your team is ranked agsit all the other ones. It's good fun and helps out the world.

You can find the WCG site here:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/

and our teams page here:

@Cervantes you are current the teams captain and i whould like to start doign some chalanges with other teams so could you pm me or give me ownership of the team?

That's funny. I just started running again a couple of days ago. I can't figure out how to change ownership of the team, Dan. I'd like to transfer, though, as I think it would be better if you managed the Team Challenges. If you can figure out how to change ownership, that'd be great. As a last ditch effort, I could see what happens if I quit the team. I'm worried that would disband the team, though.

Apprently you need to contact their staff at:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewContactUs.do

Asking them to get the team leader changed

I already give mine to SETI Very Happy Just one way to make a person think you are super smart. Laughing
"What are you doing?"
"Finding aliens, researching molecular structure, mapping the bounds of space."

Cool, thanks. I've just done that, so hopefully the change will be made soon.

Okay Dan, they have to get a request from you to take over for the team, then they will make the change. So just go to the same place (viewContactUs.do) and send that request!

What does this do exactly?
I understand that it uses idle computer power...but for what?

It's a project akin to SETI@Home if you've heard of that, except instead of searching through radio signals it tries to find cures for cancer, AIDS, muscular dystrophy, food and water shortage, and many other things. Basically, it's biology related computation for humanitarian causes.

You can learn about the details from the official page: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/viewAllProjects.do
Or take a look at Cervantes' oldschool topic here: http://compsci.ca/v3/viewtopic.php?t=10364&highlight=community+grid

So is this any different than folding@home? Although, I'm not a whole lot familiar with F@h either...

folding@home used to be one of the World Grid projects. Looks like the project has been replaced by "phase 2" http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/hpf2/overview.do
Latest from compsci.ca/blog: Tony's programming blog. DWITE - a programming contest.
