Dan, I'm really new to programming; should I bother to compete?
If need be I'd be ready to learn more but I'm not sure I can find teammates who will do the same.

Definitely! The whole idea of DWITE is to get people to practise for the more "recognized" computer science contests out there like CCC and ECOO. So go ahead, and practise up Wink
