So I was playing supreme commander today and noticed my laptop's fans were excessively loud. The bottom of the machine was burning hot. With speedfan, I found out my harddrive was at 54 degrees C. But both my cores were okay (at 25 degrees or so). So I was looking at those cooling mats that you place under your computer. Has anyone had experience with this type of cooling device. If so, does it work well (or at all)?

Yes, they work well. Mine has two fans that draws air from the sides under your laptop and blows it out the back. It is quite an improvement even without the fans on. With the fans on, you can place them on top or under a hot cable box, VCR, etc. and they will work wonders.

Cooling mats are a life saver for thous of us with gaming/power laptops. Saves your legs and hardware froming being burend and some also have usb hubs bulit in to them.

I also recomend using comperised air and claening the dust out of the laptop fans (well the laptop is off and unpluged). This had helped my laptop alot and could be your problem if your fans are noisey. You can get it (some times called dusting spray) at office suply stores or wallmart.

If you are no longer under warity and are comufortiabl with opening up your laptop you can manualy clean out the fans and get all the dust off.

P.S. just a note with compiresed air, it comes out very cold and if your laptop is still very hot it could break/crack your cpu as it goses from very hot to very cold so let it cool off.

Am I the only one with a laptop that is perpetually cool? I can play Oblivion on my laptop for a solid 4 hours on my lap and not feel a thing.

My thinkpad stays cool all the time, so your not alone. However mine tends not to get used for gaming.

Also, compressed air should be used sparingly, as it can cause the fan to spin faster then it's designed to and cause damage. A damaged fan in a laptop cooler can be VERY costly to replace.

When I'm working on a desk, I put something like a thick ruler or pad of paper under both the front & back of my laptop to keep an air gap between the bottom of the laptop and the surface. If you have fan vents on the bottom of your laptop, you should always do something like this. If you don't, it won't hurt to try.

dell inspiron e1505, C2D t7200, 2GB RAM, Radeon x1400

I can run it on medium quality (Fidelity is what they call it) while getting 20 or so frames. 20 frames is not good for a fps or anything of the sort, but for an rts its plenty
