How to sell a video game console, according to Sony

1. Make it more expensive than your competitors. People like to buy expensive things, it makes them feel high class.

2. Don't make games for your console. People will then judge your console on the merits of the games, not on the merits of the console.

3. Remove backwards compatibility and raise the prise while selling your failing console to the European market, after receiving tons of mediocre reviews. After all, as any business person knows, by reducing incentives and raising prices, you're practically guaranteed to sell out. Just look at Ford.

Best part: Sony loses about 200 bucks for every PS3 they sell. They're theory is that they will make their money back for this loss from the portion of $ they recieve when people buy games.

'Shoulda gone HD-DVD. . .

The sarcasm comes across nicely here, except that the first part of the strategy (make it expensive so people will buy it) is a totally valid marketing strategy (capitalizes on conspicuous consumption) - just not for game consoles so much as for other things, especially because most people who are buying game consoles aren't doing it for sticker-shock value.
