We are having some problems with Linux on our computer. We installed Fedora Core about a few weeks ago and after a day or two it wouldn't start up anymore. So now we installed a different distro(Mandriva), and it worked fine for a day or two, and now it is doing the same thing as Fedora was. It will start booting and then it says:
Quote: Checking root file system
/dev/hda5 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced
And then it does the check and when it is done it automatically reboots. Does anyone know why it is doing this? |

Do you mean it restarts over and over again?
And why is it not unmounting cleanly? Have you not been shutting down the computer properly? |

Try booting up the PC with the install disc in the drive, then enter recovery mode (I forget how to in Mandriva). Then run fsck on the affected partition.
Not sure if it'll work, but it's worth a shot. |

If you shutdown the computer improperly, it will give you that message. It has to scan the hard drive partion an fix inconsistencies. Once it fixes them for that partion, it will restart the computer (I'm not 100% sure why), but when it comes back up, provided it doesn't have any other partions it has to scan and repair, it will boot properly.
So you just have to make sure you shut down your computer properly. |

OK, I have got it working properly again, but I had to reboot probably 6 or 7 times before it started up properly. And I figured out why it was doing it. I didn't think it was because of improperly shutting down because as far as I knew, it was always being shut down properly. But it turns out that when my little sister wanted to use the computer in Windows, she just hit the power button, so I guess that is what has been causing this problem.
Thanks all for your help. |

Out of curiosity, what filesystem were you using? I need to know which to avoid... |
