How to check if video type is compatible for DVD Player???

I am just wondering how to check (if possible) on a dvd player, what video formats it can support (e.g. dvd/avi/mpeg, etc.) without me actually having to test them all. Thanks

Check the box. Most manufacturers will print supported filetypes on the side of the packaging. I would bet on any DVD-ROM and mp3 files working though along with any CD-ROM.

Ok, say i have an avi file which i wanted to convert to DVD then burn. What is the best way of goin about doin this. I have some software that converts (takes for friggin ever). Should i use nero to burn the DVD file? Suppose (actually don't suppose, i just am) completely new to dvd burning and there are no guides on the internet (which there aren't many decent ones). Could someone provide a kind of step-by-step. That would be great, thanks!

You can convert using the software that takes friggin ever, then burn to a DVD relatively quickly. Alternatively, you can use a suite like Nero that converts the file then burns, all of which is done in one step and takes friggin ever.

The vast majority of DVD players require a certain format the movies be in, I do believe it's mpeg-2.

Nope dvds are mpeg2 with aac sound iirc; mpeg4 is much newer then dvds.

You can use mencoder to encode a movie to the proper format for a DVD, then all you need to do is burn it.

mpeg 4 is used in HD dvd's. Also, check if your dvd player plays divx. Perhaps you don't have to convert it
