Such a baseless rumour; based on one blog post titled "Completely unsubstantiated rumour". I'm not entirely sure it'd be good for google to even consider it, given how much money youtube loses, and it's current spat of copyright troubles.

It was on CBC or whaterver, the figure is about 1. something billion.

I've heard the asking price being 1.5 billion.. I think the talks are rumored to be in the neighbourhood of 1.6...

This doesn't make sense to me though. YouTube has a questionable business model, and as has been pointed out - copyright lawsuites all over the place.

Google doesn't even gain any technology out of it - they already have Google Video.

At 20 million users, the buyout price is $75 / user. I realize that Google will splatter their own ads all over the place, but that still seems kind of out there. Though perhaps I'm not yet seeing something that involves AdSense and Videos (though they already have video ads in very limited quantaties).

Ether way, since YouTube has been started less than 2 years ago, this is friggin phenominal.

1.5 billion for increasing traffic six fold

if compsci.ca was to be priced using the same model, then our 4000 unique hits per month * $75 = $300 000. boo yeah! Though obviously our traffic is not anywhere near the same value as YouTube's, and Google isn't interested.

I wouldn't sell out anyways, since after sharing the money with Dan and the rest of you guys, it's really not that much.

and having Off Topic mod access sold is counter-productive to the said life. Someone might actually *gasp* start moderating threads here Laughing
