Firefox 2.0

Yesterday the Mozilla Foundation released their first RC of the Firefox browser.

So far my transition has been smooth. I haven't lost any bookmarks or had any problems with my profile. The interface is nice and shiny, and there appears to be a new spell check feature.

I've also noticed some nice new features designed to protect users from phishing. You can report a site which tries to phish information from users, and it will warn future visitors of the threat.

So far all sites I've used have rendered correctly. Some sites complain they're not compatible with this version, but they still work.

My only complaint (and this always happens) is that most extensions and themes still don't install in this version. I would give it about a month after the first release for most, if not all, extensions to be updated for the new version.

As for the speed of rendering, it appears to be faster. Unfortunately it still fails the Acid test, but one might argue that the acid test is an unfair test anyways.

In conclusion, Firefox 2.0 has some nice new features. However, there doesn't appear to be anything very compelling to update right away. I would wait for the official release.

Yeah, I agree, Firefox 2.0 is really not a big hit, it should be just like 1.6 lol. Comparing to IE 7.0's improvments, people will be disappointed with FF 2.0. So I don't know, I think Mozilla rushed a little for 2.0.

On linux I have yet to experience this memory leak. Firefox runs perfectly here using the 2.0 beta 2.

I tried the had tried the beta 2, and It was good...but it didn't have anything great. The add-on (pervious extension/theme) manager is great, looks good and works good too (makes things simpler). Umm actually, thats the only new thing I seen in firefox (other than the new look) and the um spell check

There is a definite speed improvement; as well as many small changes and bug fixes; just because there are no huge changes doesn't mean you shouldn't upgrade.

Phishing is the act of pretending to represent a company or organization and instead trying to steal money and/or information from an unsuspecting person.

Simply put, it's fraud.

interesting... i htink its a new 2.0 feature. i restarted comp with my firefox broswer open. (i type like Dan now right? XD thanks to firefox 2.0's new spell check) anyhow a window popped up when i relauchend firefox to ask me if i want to restore my session and apparently it loaded all the windows that were active, and logged automatically into my email!

It's not new persay... but I suppose since this functionality was provided by an extension before I suppose you could say it's new If only there was a way of saving your session on exit...

integrating spell check into firefox is a great idea. wonder what happens to the non-english languages

I don't know about any other distributions/install methods; but in portage if I enable additional languages it will pull in the relevant dictionary. I'm going to assume that it will install the correct dictionary for the users system language(s).

The google phishing is also in 1.5.7 right? Because for some sites the google message comes up and asks me if I want to continue or not- and I don't have the google pluing installed.
