Hey all, had my first computer science class at uWindsor yesterday and my Prof told us that we will be using Miranda, and he gave us a sheet with rediculously easy questions to program (i.e. a program that doubles an inputted value).

I was wondering if anyone knew a good compiler for windows that can run miranda.

I can't believe they'd teach you Miranda instead of just updating their curriculum for Haskell. It's not like Haskell is new.

Thanks for the link and input. And what prof is mazer a TA for, Dr. Kobti?

I was a TA for one of Jin's classes (she's not actually a prof, I think), but that was a second year course and it's being taught by Dr. Habed now. And we... we're not good buddies. Jamonathin get your ass over to Ataraxis and find out what's going on with Cider.

As for Miranda, yeah it's a bitch. I mean, the language isn't that difficult (especially for the stuff you'll do with it in that class), I just can't wrap my head around using functional languages. Especially if it's Miranda over Haskell. Anyways, my advice is that you really pay attention in that class. It might be boring as hell, but it's worth it. And actually, Dr. Boulos (I'm just assuming he's your prof) is one of the better lecturers you'll have until semester 4 or so.

EDIT: Andy, there's nothing to "hook up", I'm no cheater. Apparently there was some big deal about TAs/GAs giving people answers on exams in other languages (hint: it's UWindsor, and the language was not Greek Wink ), so now anyone not speaking in English during a test is automatically considered a cheater. Cool, huh?

U Windsor married Miranda about 15 years ago. The Dean, then and now, Dr. Frost believed that Functional was soon to become the dominant programming paradigm and they developed a lot of Compiler tools in Miranda. I'm not sure what else they have been doing in Miranda, but it's like a lot of institutions once they adopt a language there is a lot of inertia that prevents them from changing.

In a lot of ways, he's right. A fair number of mainstream programming languages are implementing ideas from more overtly functional programming languages.

Just take a look at C# 3.0 for one of the more blatant examples. Also, Python 2.5 includes a facility for currying.
