What window managers to those linux/bsd/*nix (and possibly OS X?) users here use? What is your favourite and why?

If you use gnome, that's probably metacity, though it could be enlightenment or sawfish if you are running < 2.10 (I think...). KDE uses kwin as it's wm. xfce4 uses xfwm4. (and yes... there are lots of options here...)

I typically prefer using Gnome... though I will use KDE if forced to. XFCE is nice too when you pretty it up a bit. I really liked Enlightenment until it got all messed up on me for no apparent reason Confused.

I really like xfwm4. It's so far the best I've used.

Freaking blindness, I was about to say "Wolverine" when I actually read the poll options.

All window managers I've tried bother me for various reasons: biggest right now is that they like to take over Alt+RMB (which Blender uses). Other than that, it's just features from different ones that I want:
- I like being able to roll up (shade?) a window by middle clicking (or sometimes scrolling up) in Englightenment (DR16)
- I like having a decent selection of window themes in Metacity (damn you Compiz)
- I like being able to move the window with Alt+LMB drag, and resize it with Alt+MMB (some, I think, switch it to Alt+MMB and Alt+RMB respectively, and Windows lacks this useful feature altogether)
- I loves me workspaces. Enlightenment's was neat, but Metacity's is best for me. This is another reason that I absolutely cannot use Compiz.

Summary: Metacity for me. But I can't wait until E17 is released (I've decided not to try the CVS version)

xfwm4! asside from the alt+*mb stuff, which can easily be done with the header/border of the window it does everything else. And excellent support for the compositor extension.

I'm partial to XFCE and fluxbox personally.
I prefer simplicity over colors and effects.

"Other", or if you want to add it to the poll go right ahead.

I switched to Xfce yesterday.

One word: Yummmmm. The compositing looks great, gives no slowdowns, and my Alt+RMB problem is mostly solved.

I really don't like Xfce, but only because it's far too lightweight for me and the design of the xfce-apps are counter-intuitive. On the other hand it is one of the faster wm's out there and if you do get used to it, it's a pretty good choice.

I really like the look and feel of GNOME-metacity, but the problem with it, is that GUI development for it is quite ugly (someone needs to rework the GTK+mm api).

I'm currently using KDE. I never did like the KDE look, but as for it's feel, it is pretty customizable. Not too long ago I installed the polyester theme and wow did that make a difference! It's looks a whole lot nicer now!
A cool thing about KDE is that GUI development for it is really neat! KDE is based on the highly productive Qt framework, which is also probably why KDE apps contain a whole lot more features and functionality as compared to similar GNOME (gtk) apps.

As for macosx I'm not switching from the default quartz-wm. Razz

For a lightweight wm, I heard openbox is a good choice, but I've never had the need to switch to a lightweight wm.

Wmii and the likes are cool in theory because you can program them, but in reality it's a real pain in the neck! Just to get something done you need to write a script! Bah!
