Do a search, there have been plenty of threads like this. I vote for a thinkpad.

There are lots of asus fan here, so I am sure they would recommand you that. And Asus is quite good itself, so I would recommand it too.
Just don't buy Gateway, HP, Dell, and the worst of all, Acer. Of course, all the small brands are definilty not in consideration I would say.
I am a big thinkpad fan, look up here:

The T60 is very nice, I am sure you won't regret it. However, don't bother with the R-series, it is very crappy.
Toshiba, my current one is a Toshiba, it over heats a lot, lol, I had to put a metal bar under the laptop for better airflow. It is a 3 year old laptop, I have used some newer ones and they dont' have the over heating problem. For 2G, you can get a very very powerful one if you go for toshiba.

And of course, you can always go for a Mac.
I am going for a Mac for my next laptop, lol, next year though, around my co-op term.

Mac's have gone to intel processors; if you want int install windows XP on a mac you can. Why you'd want to I have no idea...

I very recently got a Macbook Pro. It's great, although it does suffer from all those problems that have been discussed on the net. (Whining power supply, super hot, etc)
I suggest waiting until the next revision before jumping on the Apple bandwagon.

I bought my dad(me) a new acer laptop for christmas, I'm kind of regretting it.
I've owned an acer in the past (1999), and it had problems with the screen hinges, and power supply.
The laptop withing the first 10 days, the screen had a band go on it, it looked like a verticle band about 2 inches wide, that had messed up contrast, apparently something went, so they gave me a new laptop.
The new laptop worked for a few days and the power supply went on it, or something....wouldn't turn on, thing was completely dead-no lights at all. So they gave me the laptop I originally had (which had just returned from being RMA'ed (I bought from a local store, that I used to work at(got a deal on it, cause I'm friends with the owner)))
SO anyways....this laptops alright, however I'm starting to notice problems I originally had with my 1999 laptop....the hinges are starting to crack, where the power supply plugs in is starting to get sloppy (loose). I'm gonna try and see if they'll fix the hinges while its still under warranty but I dunno, cause its acctually physically cracked-and they don't like fixing that kind of stuff (I've been rough with the laptop, but never dropped it or anything. It just gets used alot, and moved around alot.)
Oh well, so....the only thing I regret is buying from the local store, lol, I would have rather bought from bestbuy or similar, as I probally could have pushed a little harder with the warranty/return issues I've had, like I can't get my friend to foot the bill for anything, but I might have been able to get bestbuy.
anyways, its a nice laptop, but I use it more than my dad does, so I think its time I buy another one for myself and give him this one.
A friend of mine bought a laptop from HP, from bestbuy, its a pretty nice laptop, although I've had to format it a few times from so much porn
My advice is as follows:
goto bestbuy check out what they've got, look around, try them out.
buy from a big box store, over a local store.

AFAIK. Yes, it is, although most of the common apps work on both, like you can get a mac version of microsoft office, most open sourcey projects come in mac/windows/linux such as firefox.
However the new macs are running on intels, so you can just dual boot windows/mac osx, when you want it to be a mac let it be a mac, when you want it to be a windows machine let it, I think thats the perfect solution as far as compatibility.

Like a couple of people here, i myself would opt for a thinkpad. Asus is something to consider as well. Toshiba has been rated by consumer reports as the most reliable (if thats what you value)
Hp tends to have extremely short battery life
Dell...lets not go there
Sony why pay the "sony" price for a mediocre machine?
And macs, I agree to the suggestion to wait a while before getting one

Interesting... considering this message is brought to you by the Thinkpad R60. I absolutely love it, and many, many other people I know have the exact same model. In fact, there's about 4000+ of them at my school.
Remember, you can customize most laptops out there on the website. Just because the base model has lower specs, doesn't mean that any derivative from that model will be poor.

Is that the laptop your school forces you to buy?

You bet! Only those in part-time programs may opt out of the program.
Oh, and another word of note. As mentioned before, do not buy no-name brands unless you know they're damn good. I made that mistake, and right now have a laptop without a working screen, power button, and CD-ROM drive.
I hear good things about IBM, Apple, and Toshiba laptops.

Lenovo customer support is wicked. My dad has a thinkpad and he has had to get some things fixed on it (thought more then normal wear mostly... laptops and boats don't mix too well...) and they were excellent about it.
