since martin's emachine thing was crap (overheating, screen flickering, way too heavy, etc)
im probably going to get this.

i dont really need anything spectacular at this moment. I think this well do, look like a good deal. besides i think its pointless to get anything high end at this moment. might as well wait for the intel's new chipset next year optimized for vista (no linux for me ^.^) |

I should warn you about modern notebooks: they're not called "laptops" anymore for a reason. Unless the machine's equipped with a mobile CPU and video card, it's liable to make a whole bunch of noise when on, last the whole of one hour on batteries, and also sterilize you if you set it on your lap. |

Most of the time, that isn't permanent. But in the rare case... well, everyone knows about that exploding dell laptop. |

err i dont think any notebooks can take "nonmobile" video cards, and most notebooks are sold with an mobile processor including the one bugz is looking at. |

Aha, yeah, there are some monsters that have PCI-E vid-cards, and some laptops that have desktop processors.... For instance, my dad's laptop has a 3.2 ghz 478 pin (intel) in his 12 pound monster. I don't know why he needs it, he only goes on ebay and checks his email.
Also, look at some Alienware beasts with their desktop components: http://www.alienware.com/product_pages/notebook_all_default.aspx |

err just because its pci-e interface doesnt mean its not a mobile videocard... an x1600 for notebook isnt the same as an x1600 for desktop, the desktop one uses a R530 VPU, while the notebook one uses M56. my notebook uses a geforce 6600 128mb pci-e videocard, and it doesnt get that hot at all |

I think for laptops, it is best to get a 1 gig memory right away, since the hard drive is slow, and the video card shares some. Personally, 512 mb is not good enough for me; takes so long to load stuff. |

wow yeah that does seem like a pretty sweet deal. the hard drive is 5400rpm sata, so you'll be fine in terms of drive speed. my only concern with this model is that it uses a xpress 1100 igp.. it's fine if you dont plan on playing anygames more graphics intensive than CS |

I thought even SATA2 is not even fast enough compare to memory itself. |

no you're right, disk access will always be slower than memory acess (thats why i dont paging files). but my point was 7200 rpm is the standard speed for highend laptops now, notebook disk access speeds arent much slower than desktop ones |

not by much. many benchmarks were done comparing 7.2k vs 5.4k hdd and the battery life are almost identical |
