PostPosted: Thu Jul 13, 2006 10:48 am   Post subject: Unable to install Microsoft files

Hey,
This is odd- and in a way quiet...bad...

I cannot install any file that I download from Microsoft.com, even if its a windows update. Every time I try and install any file from M$, my computer restarts instantly. Once its started up again, I get a 'Windows recovered from a critical error' message.

I have no idea why this is happening, I really haven't done anything. Though, a few weeks ago I had a really annoying virus on my computer which Norton took a few tries to remove completely. It now gone (..I think? Norton or any other anti-virus scanners aren't showing anything).
A few weeks after that I had uninstalled IE7 Beta 2 from my computer to install IE7 Beta 3, that's when I noticed the problem because when I tired installing it, my computer crashed :S But I figured it was only for this one file. But then just yesterday I tried doing some windows updates- and as soon as it tired to install the first file, my computer automatically restarted.

And yeah, this is only happning to files that I download from Microsoft.com -.- I can install every other damn file.

Anyone know why this is happening? Is there a way to fix it without, buying a mac, switching to Linux or throwing my computer out the window and setting it on fire?

sounds like registry curruption
Check M$'s troubleshooting. There's a lot to sift through Rolling Eyes but if it's happened to anyone else in the past then you should be able to find something about it.

I just ran the updated before shutdown (M$ Gives that option when you have updates ready to install- install them and then shutdown the comp) it crashed/restarted when it said "installing 1 of 7" -.-
Didn't get a critical error message though (didn't log onto admin after the crash)

I'm searching the M$ support site...no luck so far

*** EDIT ***
For to tell you this- any files (.exe) I download from Microsoft (or any other site actually, as long as they are files made by M$) have a broken image icon, they show up as the 'cmd' prompt iwindow thingy, not as the setup icon

Sending would could as uploading, right?

As for the dump, there should, IIRC, be a button of some sort that says "tell me more" when you get the send report dialogue.

yeah thats the window, it should prompt to send a minidump of your memory (not very useful, but sometimes you can extract some info from it) to microsoft's OCA (Online Crash Analysis), where it'll sort it by bugcheck id and send it to the software company that caused the crash. i dont have symbols, but if i have the dump might be able to tell you what type of crash it is.

ugh im in such a habbit of saying don't send so I dont even read it -.-
I'll check it tomorrow- now the computer auto-restarts because the windows updates try and install the updates automatically on start up, I can't even turn off the automatic updates -.-

Umm I believe this is it- i think i got it from the address provided in the error report

http://www.aarondm.com/Dump.rar

***EDIT***
I was doing some system scans in safe mode (figured the updates wouldn't automatically start there or something..) and mid-way through the scans the computer restarted.

But when I logged into my admin account, I was able to manually do 4/5 updates (excluding the M$ Office 2003 ones). When it reached the 5th update though: Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2006 (KB890830)
My computer restarted -.-

****EDIT****
The latest report said this:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx...

*****EDIT*****
UM okay so, I decided to run a registery repair scan thingy- when it reached to the scanning for missing filenames or moved files (something like that) it crashed o.O (comp restarted) and now I keep getting the error (the above M$ link) -.- I tired their suggestion, no luck -.-

Just curious.. is your windows version on the up and up??? Perhaps windows validation is screwing you over? If not, perhaps your video card is umm.. dead.. ? Do you have another video card to test in that box? Thirdly, you really impatient for that IE7 eh.. . why dont you just use firefox.. then you woulnt have had this problem would ya Wink

No really... Its not IE that is causing the problem. I think I found the problem with the M$ Support- when I had a virus it apprently created/modified some registery files that Windows uses- and norton I think, deleted it...

Up and up? I... don't understand Rolling Eyes

Anyhow, hopefully eventually it gets solved, I don't want to re-do my huge db Rolling Eyes (will get even bigger tomorrow 1 GB!!!!)

sry for not checking this earlier.. umm yeah 0xEA, its a VPU Hang, uninstall your video card drives completely, then delete all the .dll and .sys files that is related to the GPU, then try to see if the error still occurs. if not re-install the latest drivers
