Kidding. Wink

If you want to make a decent webpage, you'll need to know a lot more than just HTML. Take a look at this forum: it's done in php. (Though there is HTML present also to format things.) You can do some stuff with JavaScript. Probably best of all your options, though, is Ruby on Rails. If you're serious about learning web-programming, you should take a look at Ruby and Ruby on Rails

To be fair, I think you can make decent webpages in HTML. That is, if all you want to do is display some information (say, an extensive guide) straight HTML is fine. Stuff like PHP gives you more power and allows for input from the user. Then you get into things like the Web 2.0 stuff and you get all kinds of interaction.

HTML is a better starting point unless you know what you're doing first. PHP is amazing, but you have to have a compatible server, or set up a private server on your own computer to use it.

Remember, if you have any questions about why something isn't doing what it's suppost to, there's always the (X)HTML Help forum. Of course, there are many, many sites out there dedicated to teaching HTML. A few of my favourites are W3Schools, from the W3C, and HTML Goodies.

Please always remember to write standards compliant code. Yes, that means no fancy <marquee> tag on your pages. W3Schools should teach you how to write standards-compliant HTML since it is from the same organization which creates the standards, so it is an invaluable resource.

Once you think you've mastered HTML, there's always much more to learn. CSS will make your life easier, PHP is a mess but fun to play with, and Ruby on Rails is just a joy to work with.

A good chunk of the solution lies in Keeping It Simple.

I don't know... I'd call changing a few properties here and there pretty simple. Background image? Font size?

But, I 'heard' in IE7 they fixed up the CSS/(X)HTML so now it wont be hard to make your sites compatible for both browsers.

They fixed *some* things, it's still quite borked.

Eventually they'll catch up to browsers released in 2000 in terms of standards compliance.
