Reality Check

How hard is it? You guys are now swaying my decision. I'm pretty close now to choosing Econ (which version should I take?) and Phil 145. Also, is microeconomics available to me in first year?

I didn't have Lary but I did hear great things about his classes. Both are easy if you do some study.

Philosophy is interesting, but hard.

Whatever...I'm up for the challenge. Economics and Philosophy it is. Not sure which economics yet though...man I got a lot of studying ahead of me.

Aw man! I went to add Phil 145 and there's a conflict. The class is the same exact day as my CS class so I can't take it unless I do the distance ed. Should I go with the distance ed (I really wanted Philosophy 145) or should I just pick another course?

Take another course. Enroll into 145 another time. What I like the best about Philosophy courses are the class discussions; DE ruins that. I'm thinking of taking PHIL145 this Winter term.

So I ended up taking Psych 101 and Econ 102 (couldn't take 101). I'm taking 145 next term.

I heard nothing but good things about the Human Sexuality course... though it seems it's a lot more fun if you take it with a girl... and study together.

Well, I wanted to pick electives that I could progress in. Ideally, I'd like my electives every year to be Econ and Phil. I think it's far less useful to scatter your courses and take a course in one area and then never take it again as opposed to simply continuing on every year with the electives you choose.

Next term I think I'm probably taking Econ 101 and Phil 145 and then the subsequent year I'll probably just end up taking the higher level of these courses.

I think you are supposed to do both. There are depth and breadth requirements to graduate.

Well thanks a lot for the input guys. It really was a great help. Hopefully I'll have a nice time at UW.

CS 135 = 10:00 - 11:20AM Tuesday and Thursday

Econ 102 = 10:30 - 11:20AM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Math 135 = 1:30 - 2:20PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Math 137 = 12:30 - 1:20PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Psych 101 = 8:30 - 9:50AM Tuesday and Thursday

Someone told me my Psych teacher is the best.

PHIL 145 isn't like a regular Philosophy course; from what I remember there weren't open class discussions. And there is no higher level version of it.

Also you will probably not want to take all upper-year classes in your upper-years... I found when you have lower-level electives the term goes smoother. Though sometimes I just couldn't keep myself from choosing all math courses.

Oh.. that's a shame.

There were in PHIL215 and PHIL315.

I was in 145 for a week before realizing that 5 courses is way too much, and it was the only course that I didn't really need this term. I still need any 100 level PHIL for my depth requirement (which apparently I'm doing backwards...)

Whoa wait. So you say 5 courses is too much? By my calculations, I'm going to have to take 5 courses just about every term...unless there is something I'm missing about the requirements.

It really depends on the term, what those courses actually are, how much work is required for each, etc.

There was a term when I took 6 courses, and passed. This term, though, comes with a weekly assignment from every course. On top of that, two of the courses I'm taking (Math 138 and Stat 231) are really not something that want to be doing. Bottom line is that I chose not to take the 5th course, in favour of maintaining my sanity.

As for the requirements, I think that you are required to take a minimum number of "full-time" terms. 3 courses qualifies you for that. Though... that would add a couple more years to your schedule, before graduation.

I did 5 courses every term. In first year that should not be a problem (looking back I would consider doing 6). But upper-year courses tend to be significantly more demanding. I had terms with four or five 300/400-level math courses and it wasn't pretty. Probably space them out with easier electives if you can.
