Hey guys, I was just wondering what the best internet browser was (in your opinion of course). I am currently using FIREFOX but my computer often uses >90% cpu on FIREFOX alone (it goes up and down, not constantly above 90). so I am looking for another browser, better than ie that I will probably not stuff full of applications. I downloaded safari earlier today but I cannot scroll for some reason... Any and all suggestions appreciated p.s. is opera any good? |

It really depends on what I want to do. If I'm just doing some quick browsing and want fast page loading, I use chrome, but I normally want the added features of Firefox's addons, so I'll have to go with Firefox, since it's what I use day to day. Oh, and Opera seems to be a pretty nice browser. It seems to be a bit easier on memory than Firefox, although it lacks the addons I love so very much. It's definitely at least worth a look. |

On Windows, I think the best is Opera. It's the fastest, but you don't have the add-ons like in Firefox. Safari is also good, but it's kind of "chunky" (as saltpro puts it) on Windows. Edit: I forgot to mention that Chrome is also very good, but it's basic and is only good for if you want to view a few webpages. |

Worry not, I have added Chrome.
Oh well, thanks for the suggestions! Anyways, my thoughts...
Edit: I suppose I should quantify how IE is "faster" to load. By load I mean start up. Loading web pages is usually slow. |

I used Opera for a bit on my PC. It doubles as a torrent downloader (forget the actual term) so you don't need to open limewire or similar massive appliations. I switched to firefox quickly, as it gets around most of the restrictions on my school's computers (muahahaha). I hate safari, mostly because I can't be bothered to looks for and get used to the buttons and options & stuff. My favourite is Firefox by far. Also, http://compsci.ca/v3/viewtopic.php?t=18768 http://compsci.ca/v3/viewtopic.php?t=18291 http://compsci.ca/v3/viewtopic.php?t=6048 Just a few of the many identical threads. Chrome now has themes, and the development of extensions is coming soon. There's already basic extension support in the developer builds. Chrome is more or less my favourite, though I like it's clean and speedy interface, thus I won't be installing many extensions when it does come out. I'll keep those mainly on Firefox. |

I use Opera 99.9% of the time. I'm amused to see that people are saying Firefox is "chunky" because I had heard that Opera was worse, but never experienced anything to back that up. In my experience, Opera has always run better than Firefox. Plus with Opera, you needn't go search for all the add-ons because everything you need is already there. It does lack the customization of Firefox, but most, if not all, the features you need are already there. I learn something new about it everyday lol |

I use Firefox mostly because i have yet to find anything better. I find Firefox has memory and cpu issues, however i like the UI and add ons enought to use it over opera. Chrome and IE are windows only so they are not realy and option for me. I also am not a fan of webkit witch Chrome and Safari use. I do like Opera mini for my portable devices however. |

Well, If you really wanted to get chrome you could just build it from source. Although that seems like a lot of work just to get a browser. |

You are free to block ads here, i have ad block plus on some of my computers and am to lazy to turn it off for compsci.ca. As i see it, if you use ad block plus your not clicking ads any way. What i hate are websites that stop working when you block there ads for no good reason or try to work around ad block plus. TheGuardian001 wrote: Well, If you really wanted to get chrome you could just build it from source. Although that seems like a lot of work just to get a browser. Most of my applications on linux are complied from source (i use gentoo) however to my knowalge there is no offical realses for linux and most of the ones to date are not very stable. If i am wrong let me know as i would like to try it. gianni wrote: Dan @ Tue Aug 04, 2009 3:27 pm wrote: I also am not a fan of webkit witch Chrome and Safari use.
Why? I am still mad about it screwing up the file upload standard and breaking support for dwite. Tho yes i know the issue has been fixed in the new Rails and there are patchs to fix it but i still don't think Rails should have needed to make a work around. Beyond that i am ok with webkit but i don't like Chrome for other reasons (no offical linux support, no add ons, i don't like the UI, and worried about privacy issues), as for Safari i don't own an apple computer (reasons for witch would be for another topic). I do have Konquer on most of my linux desktops witch i blive is webkit based and not to bad as a file manager but i have had issues with how associating an html file with an editor can break the web browsing (it trys to open web pages in the editor rather then it's browser). |

I don't block ads because they kinda pay for the websites. It's like time shifting TV and skipping commercials (Which I do anyway, but the TV shows aren't making less money because I'm not seeing the ads) |

Thanks for adding chrome rdrake. After getting conflicting reports on all the browsers in the poll I ended up downloading them all. Chrome- good for opening up windows when I click on links that people send me over msn (youtube etc.) Opera- would be good if I used torrents FIREFOX- still my favorite but no longer default browser IE- what can I say? I don't hate it but it's pretty useless Safari- <--- I hate this And for anyone who wonders why I hate safari it is because: 1. It doesn't scroll for me 2. Apple crap all over home page 3. Nothing special about it. 4. It irritates me on a subconscious level, or some combination of all the above. |

WebKit easily takes the cake as the best HTML rendering engine currently available. revangrey wrote: Safari- <--- I hate this And for anyone who wonders why I hate safari it is because: 1. It seems like you have already chosen to dislike Safari for reasons unrelated to the quality of the software. The only legitimate reason you provided was that scrolling wasn't working for you. I would bet money that this issue isn't even related to Safari |

maybe...maybe... It might have been because I know people who were all like "WHOA SAFARI IS SOOOOO GOOD" It was actually the only browser I heard anyone say anything good about, so it was a bit of a letdown. I still have yet to see anything special about it although I freely admit that I used it far less than any of the other browsers I downloaded. I'm really not a hater I just don't like being disappointed, no hard feelings p.s. when I use it I get that supremely irritated feeling like a mosquito buzzing by your ear or something. |

No it's not that one, it had to do with it providing inconsistent content types (some times no content type at all) witch broke things in older versions of rails. And it was an issue in webkit as it effected all browsers using it. As i mentioned before i have nothing in partical aginsted Safari as i can't realy use it, i just found the insoncsites in webkit's contet types for file uploads compared to other browsers anyoing. Edit: Here is the changeset for rails where the missing content type was worked around: http://dev.rubyonrails.org/changeset/7005 It says it is for Safari 3 but i was able to reproduce it with chrome and konqueror. |

I heard it was oh so amazing... and it wasn't. I find it irritating because somehow it manages to hog up the same amount of cpu as firefox even though it doesn't do half as much, the lack of scroll (for me at least), and from what I have seen it isn't very customizable. It's not like I hate it but if it has some good traits please let me know |

My browsers are Firefox 2.0.0.9 K-Meleon 1.1.2 Opera 9.2 Elinks (for linux) Konquerer (for linux/kde) IE 6 I really love the first three. Firefox is my favorite but sometimes I feel that its a little too bloated. Since reinstalling windows I like using K-Meleon sometimes because it is the fastest browser for Windows. Opera has its nice features that I'm fond of using from time to time too. |
