CS4U @ UWaterloo Day 2006

Computer Science 4 U Poster

I know a lot of students have been asking about getting into the University of Waterloo, and Computer Science programs in general. Possibly because UW keeps on top of Maclean’s rankings.

“[University of Waterloo] finished first in the ‘most innovative’ category, second in ‘best overall’ and ‘leaders of tomorrow’, and finished third in ‘highest quality.’”

“Along with the reputation category, UW captured several other first places. They are ’student awards’, ’scholarship and bursaries’ and ‘alumni support’.”

Computer Science programs in Universities (not limited to Waterloo) are enormously different from what is generally found in highschools. Some students love it, while others find themselves in an environment different from what they have imagined. This is why it is important to do research while still in highschool, to know what you are getting yourself into.

In a two-for-one deal, Waterloo is hosting its second CS4U @ UWaterloo Day event for high-school students in grades 9, 10, and 11. It might be a good opportunity to come and see what the Computer Science field is about.

“We’ll explore the breadth and depth of computer science, what computers can and can’t do, and how computer science is changing everything from entertainment to health care.

The activities of the day require no computer science background – every student and teacher is welcome! Attendance is free. Refreshments and pizza lunch will be provided.”

If anything, it’s free lunch. The event will mostly compose of different presentations:

  • What is Computer Science – Prabhakar Ragde
  • Origami and Algorithms – Anna Lubiw
  • Hold Still While I Slice Your Brain: Medical Imaging – Jeff Orchard
  • Pen, Paper, and a Smart Cell Phone – Ed Lank
  • What Computers can’t do and what can we gain from their shortcomings? – Shai Ben-David

Though I’m sure that some of those could be skipped to walk around and see the campus.

The event will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2006
9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

University of Waterloo, Davis Centre
Register Online to attend.

Thank to Silent Avenger for the heads up.
