LoL. It's only his first week. You can't accuse him of spamming just yet. Think about it... when you first join a forum, every post/thread is new to you and if you like to contribute, you will end up posting a lot. Give the guy a week to catch up with the rest of us before you accuse him of spamming. |

Weird story how I found this site. I just started up with Turing in my comp sci class. And I decided I was gonna google Turing Help. I ended up at this other forum, that had NOTHING to do with Turing.. but I found a thread there, that said stuff along the lines of... "Hey guys, apparently we're like the number 1 site for Turing programming or sumthin, like theres these kids comin in wanting Turing help." Well eventually someone at that forum linked compsci, as a good forum for Turing. And here I am. At the ONLY forum that actually helps with Turing. |

What i realy whont to know is how "gay" is an inusult at all. If we are taking about it in the homosexual scences calling some one gay to hurt them is stupied. If they are aucatly gay it is not an insualt and the fact that you are saying they are it in a negive way logcly proves that they are not. Also whould like to say that i am exteramly dispointed with how socity seems to be using "gay" as a negtive term. Such as with this example. There is nothing wrong with being gay and inantimate or virutal conspects (like pics) can not have a sexual orientation. Also to say that somthing is gay beacuse gay peoleop whould supistively like/do it is storyeo typing, pergdusits and wrong. Poeleop that have difrent sexual oreations then us are not bad, and are just like every one eltes. We are all humans and peoleop and in my option the only gorup that is being unhuman are the peoleop that are being perdugisted of minornity gorups. I realy do not see how there life style effects you and hostly you should just minde your own business. Note: The above rant was not aimed at any one and was only at scoity in genreal. |

To be fair calling some one "dumb" is prity messed up to. Since if they realy where dumb they could not heare or respond to your insualt. The insualt dumb comes from a term used to be used to disribe peoleop who could not hear or talk. Mostly hear i think. Acuatly almost all our instualts are based ether on a minority gorup of some kind or a scorce on an IQ test.......makes you think.... |

None, why most we hate? Hate only leads to pain on both sides. Obvesly no one is perfickt, my self incuded, but i think we should try to not insualt peoleop at all. There is simpley no need. This dose not mean we have to agrea with them or not aruge with them, just that there is no need to let an agurment get in to insualting and hurting peoleop. |

Unlike calling someone gay; calling someone dumb has a rather long history and can indeed mean that hte individual in question is of lesser intelligence (IQ is not a very good measure of intelligence btw). What i ment by the IQ test coment is that things like "stuidped", ect are aucatly levels on the 1st IQ test and where termes to refure to peoleop with mental disablitys. I aregea that calling some one dumb is far less wrong or contrves as gay but the orgains of the insualt are still wrong. As i was saying we should just try not to insualt each other tho if u have to i guse Monty Python ones whould be better then the norm. |

Oh, and because the avatars rock. You know Cornflake, you should really read the posts *carefully*. So for your reason "a", the answer is in my post. and reason b, did I say ever say I was insulting? Oh and about the avatars, different people = different likes and unlikes. Martin wrote: Criticizing someone for smoking is socially acceptable. Criticizing someone for being obese is not.

Obesity is genetic in the extent that some people have higher metabolisms than other people. Some people have higher lung capacities, which makes smoking less dangerous to them - why do they still get criticized? Obesity is just as dangerous. |

I realy think you are missing the point and playing with words here martin. 1st of all the problem peoleop have with smoking is not that it will kill the person who is smoking but that it also hurts all the peoleop around them and who breath in there air. Also there are peoleop that are more senstive to smoke and can start amsatica atacks. There is good reasning for making peoleop smoke outside and away from others we do not just do this becuses we do not like them or somthing, lol. Now as for your coment there about them bothing being dangures to your health. Yes they are and we have comapins to incorge peoleop to aviod both. We have less for obseity becuses it dose not hurt other peoleop and that it is a more complicated issue in that you have to eat but you do not have to smoke. In adation i do not think they are equaly dangures, i hostly do not know if one is more or less but i do know the leading causes of both heart deises and canser is smoking well obslity is only second for heart desise. Also about that lung casity coment, lung caspity will help for the short term effects of smoking but dose not make you less likey to get canser. Now to take this back to the topic of real discrimation agsited peoleop that smoke. I am not realy shure what you are define as discrmation. Saying you can not smoke in place X is not discrmation since it is talking about an atation, it is not saying smokers can not be in place X. So what i am thinking you are refureing to is saying to peoleop "you should not smoke" vs saying "you should not over eat". But i whould refure back to the fact that there are campains that say both of thess in genreal to evey one. Now all we are left with is peoleop tell indivaidals that they are overwegith vs tell some one invdaialy that they should not smoke. To this i whould say we get back to the gentics idea. In some cases it whould be exteramly difucalt for peoleop to stay at an ideal wegith since gentical it was not ment to be. However with smoking nothing other then the adacation is making you smoke. I realy dougth that you will find some one who whonts to be overwegith, but most smokers are not trying to quit. Hostly in ether case i do not think it is any of your bizness what others do as long as it dose not hurt any one eltes directly or indirectrly. However smoking dose hurt others when you are forced to be in close proxmity to some one who is smoking. So i do not see how asking some one to smoke outside or away from you is disrcmation. Simpley smoking is an ataction and being overwegit is a sate of being and smoking effects peoleop out side you. Thess are the keys as to what is the difrence. |

People smoke in daycares here. It's nuts. They love their tabaco. The comment I was referring to was someone saying to someone who was smoking "smoking is disgusting." If they had said "you're fat, it's disgusting" a lot of people would have had a problem with it. Between obesity and smoking, smoking is worse, sure. Obesity is only the second leading cause of preventable death in the US (no figures for Canada). If you went to a friend who was a smoker and said "look, you really should quit." they'd either shrug you off or try to quit. If you went to an overweight friend and said "look buddy, you need to hit the treadmill" chances are they'd take it as an insult. Hence, socially acceptable to criticize a smoker. |

If your obese the sure you take up more room; and you are probably increasing your chances of catching any number of deseases; but when you smoke you are harming yourself and those around you. Smoking is arguably worse for that specific reason, because you are harming others. |

Author: | Albrecd [ Wed Mar 22, 2006 5:37 pm ] |

But the numbers are not so great as we may be lead to believe. The government hires insurance companies (life insurance) to do studies on smoking/second hand smoke vs. Cancer. These companies would benefit by finding a higher rate of Cancer as it would allow them to boost rates on smokers and those who live with smokers. I'm not saying that this is hapenning, just something to ponder. |
