Firefox and Opera

Post subject:  Firefox and Opera
I know after the announcement of Opera being released as freeware alot of people switched over to it from Firefox (or at least played around with it). Just curious... how many people are staying with Opera? What is it that makes you stay away from Firefox?

Personally I'm thinking of going back. I had everything set up just the way I liked, everything worked just the way I wanted it to work, and adblocking annoying pictures is just great.

Other than personal preference, I'm really not seeing anything terribly extraordinary from Opera.

I can see those reasons.

On the other hand... Firefox, while rock-solid on Windows is less than wonderfully stable on Linux, for me. I like the stability of Opera.

I think that opera is much better laid out than Firefox. The tabs being above the explore bar makes more sense in my opinion. Same with the [x]'s being on the tabs rather than in the corner. Alas, no adblock though.

Now, that's not to say that I don't also like Firefox. It's a bizarre love triangle.

I like Opera much more then Firefox. like Martin, I also like the layout of Opera much better then Firefox's. I've been using Opera for 3 or 4 months now, and I don't have any problems with it.

I'm staying with Opera.

I started using Opera before trying out Firefox. I found nothing incredibly novel about FF that would make me want to switch. (I found it a lot closer to IE - I think Opera is more novel).

Also, a lot of independent studies show that Opera is a faster browser (page loading), and I tend to agree.

yea a lot of you guys complain about firefox's instability (well on linux anyways)... i just want to point out.. it's rock solid on archlinux.. and ehm.. its zippier than my windows version..

Some site don't render correctly on opera.. so i dont use it on linux... but on windows opera runs faster than firefox... hence that's my default there.. on the mac it's camino & safari.. heh

It's not instable in that it spontaneously crashes, but the XUL interface sometimes... just quits, leaving a rendered page and big gray bars where the toolbars and such were.

Cue the best part about Firefox - extensions!

The "Tab Mix" extension allows you to have a close button on each tab.

Having said this, I haven't yet had the time to check out Opera and see which I like better - it's still on my todo list.

I'm on Opera right now. I like the Mouse Gestures a lot. I like the fact that you can detach tabs.
I don't like how it doesn't seem to cache images. I don't like how, when I click a link on a page that has not completed loading it screws up a little, such as by outputing some of the html code on the screen or modifying the size of the tables. I don't like the fact that it doesn't use the system theme.

I switched to Opera permanently simply because Firefox took ten or more seconds to load for the first time per session on Linux (it fared better on Windows, but still pales on both platforms in comparison to Opera). I miss the extensions, but I don't really do anything supremely fancy with my browser anyway.

Say, for live journal, I go to my friends page, and it loads from cache, so it is necessary for me to refresh every time I visit. Is there anyway I can avoid that?

Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Browsing
Un-tick "Re-use Existing Page"

Update: You can also go into "History" and put a check in "Empty on Exit" beside "Disk Cache", so that it uses new info when you re-open the browser.

Firefox 1.4 & 1.5 Beta has a really annoying problem, not sure if really a problem but .... Now when Im dling stuff in the background (torrents), it slows down my browsing speed.... -.-
This definately never used to happne before...at least I couldn't feel it.

Actually, you've got it backwards. The reason Opera made it free was because the company was so succesfull that they could afford to operate off of support costs alone.

What sort of company decides to counter bad sales and lack of profit with giving away their product for free? Razz Opera is still a thriving company, simply able to make money from tech support/donations/advertising. Exactly how many commercial open-source projects operate, only ... Opera isn't open source yet Confused

It wouldn't be an entirely novel idea. Opera gives away their desktop browser for free, gets a boatload of attention and pushes the market in a standards-compliant direction. This makes it more likely that they'll sell Opera for handheld devices like smartphones, which is ultimately more likely to generate substantial revenue.

Microsoft gives things away for free all the time to support its business model.

Why do you think they haven't really cracked down on piracy effectively? People use Windows and Office because "everyone uses it". If everyone had to pay for it, then not everyone would use it, and the single compelling reason to use their product goes out the window. They make the money back by charging large companies exorbitant licensing fees. Those companies pay it because they're afraid of getting sued, and they're afraid of being left out in the cold if they don't follow Microsoft's lead, because "everyone uses Windows and Office".

BTW, Opera makes all its money off its mobile divison, since more and more phone companies are licensing Opera as (rightfully) the best mobile browser out there. That's why they can afford to give away Opera desktop. And that's also why Opera will probably never go open source.
