I get to speak to Gates (yes, THE Gates) in person on Thursday. I'll take any good/intelligent questions compsci might have for him and ask him on compsci's behalf. (and nothing about linux) |

Man, Tony Lin actually got to talk to Jet Li (yes, THE Jet Li). AND he got to ask him about Linux. (OK, I made up the part about Linux... it was probably about Mac stuff) |

Ask him about the impmentation of tursted computing in long horn and futtuer windows os relases and how he can justify being big brother to a comunity (ie. the internet) that was desinged around the ideas of freedom of speah and freedom of infomation. |

Ask him why he doesn't just retire. He could certainly afford to. He doesn't need any positive associations Microsoft brings, and he'd be better off without the negative associations. If he's still interested, why not go off and create a new company? Get back some of the entrepreunerial spirit. |

I like wtd's question. Ask him what still motivates him. I imagine that it's not money. At $50 billion , anything else is just a number. $100 billion? Just another number. More than any one person could possibly spend. Ask him "When you're at the top of the mountain, what's there left to look forward to?" I'm definitely jealous of you bugz. Ahh... I want a signed Windows XP cd... And Dan, it's called Windows Vista now. |

Ask him to visit compsci.ca o.O Then he better be ready to read all the M$ sucks posts tho, but he might already be used to it. Ask him how many times a year does he get sued, or at least his company gets sued M$ had to pay $761m to RealNetworks recently XD |

Ask for it anyway! Tell him that he's one of the great figures that inspires computer science students across the planet, and that you'd love to have his autograph. Man, I definitely would. Bring a Windows XP cd with you. Preferably a legit one... |

Ask him - If he would still like to buy your arm for $1,000,000. - What he was smoking when he promoted Ballmer to CEO. - if he intends to continue purchasing evey company that sues him - whether he has enough money to buy his soul back from Satan yet As much as I hate Gates as a monopolist and a tyrant, you gotta respect him (kind of like I have a healthy respect for Napoleon or Ghengis Khan). In all seriousness, I think martin's question is the best so far. "Ask him what still motivates him" I'd also be curious about how much of a design role he still plays in his company, or whether he's mostly sidelined to administration & business issues. Terrible loss to see all that programming skill wasted in a boardroom. |

hmm although he's a CEO.. i don't think it's him who makes all those decisions anymore.. he's elected the Members of the Dark Counsel (you know after selling his soul). They give him fame.. power... riches.. on one condition: he does their bidding for enternity... (aha!) |

To the best of my knowledge, AVW TELAV was setting up in the Davis Centre foyer this morning for the web broadcast of Mr. Gate's session from Hagey Hall. (So yeah, I think a bunch of students who get to "see" Bill Gates will actually be watching remotely) There were these GIANT BLUE DRAPES hanging from the ceiling ... xD of course you all know what I immediately thought: teh blue screen of DOOM! XD |

I also want to hear what still motivates him Or ask why they don't use their piles of cash for some inovative R&D, rather than just buying up every company holding a software patent. |

Bah, MathSoc refused my request to attend his presentation. I wonder if your question affected the decision? I didn't sign up right away because I wanted to think it over... My question was asking how he would respond to Sun president Jonathan Schwartz, who recently claimed that Web services have become more important than desktop applications. |

Fill an old bag with blank CDs labelled with the names of various Microsoft products. Rig the bag so that when you go to shake his hand the bag rips and spills the CDs all over the floor. I bet he'd laugh... |

The same way any savvy business would deal with it. Absolutely trash the idea of web services replacing conventional desktop apps, while secretly developing a suite of web service based apps. Try to convince the rest of the world to give up on the idea, then bring out your own products and claim that web services are the greatest thing since sliced bread. |

Exactly, except replace "secretly developing a suite of web service based apps" with "covertly buy out small but innovative software companies who design web service based apps." |

Well, yes. In the business world "developing" an idea doesn't have the saqme connotation that word does among programmers. |

Well he basically talked about how far technology and the computer has gone and where it will lead us... Then he showed us some "cool" stuff they are working on. The xbox360 was unimpressive to say the least... Maybe it was just the game he was playing, and I think he sucked on purpose so people would laugh. The "smart table" was kinda cool but will take years until its actually implemented. To me the visit seemed like a promo for microsoft office, xbox360, etc etc... |

I actually had a good question (I searched "what would you ask bill gates" on google and picked a relevant one that appeared on some news site) but they didnt pick me. BTW those dudes cancelled my meeting with gates. not sure why. |

Or people would have laughed anyways, so he pretended as if they were laughing at his staged gameplay At least they got the system actually working this time around |

brenn wrote: What's the Smart Table about?
Well basically its a table that will interface with your cellphone/pda type device. You set it on the table and it blows up your screen so you have a bigger viewing area and displays it on the table. You can write direclty on the table and whatever you wrote would be transferred to your pda. You could also take something like say a business card, place it on the table, and the table would read the card then store the information in your address book. Something like this would be used in an airport or other public places so you wouldnt have to carry around a laptop. Those were the things he demonstrated. |
