The Playstation Portable, Sony's handheld gaming console. It's doomed to failure due to a number of factors, including, but not limited to:

  • Lack of compelling games
  • Trailing the Nintendo DS by a large margin in North American and Eurpoean launch dates
  • High price
  • MemoryStick capability, and the fact that such media is horribly expensive compared to SD or CF memory

Other problems I've heard about were extremely short battery life and the weight.

It's $50 more than the DS.

Launch titles include a new GTA game, a new Metal Gear Solid game, Dynasty Warriors, Need For Speed, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy.

Lots.

I really haven't seen anything come out that's worth buying a DS for yet.

Nintendo DS: 275g
Sony PSP: 260g

The battery life on the PSP according to most places is between 3 - 5 hours for gaming.

Sorry to be the one to inform you, but the MGS for the PSP is a turn based card game. As in you use playing cards to move and attack... its not what you think.

So I see. I saw Martin's link. I was going to say disappointed as soon as I saw "turn based", but now I think disgusted would be more appropriate. Really, Dan, we need some sort of puke emoticon. I hope, for my sake, that Kojima wasn't directly involved in this farce.

Back to the PSP discussion:
Well, I've just lost all interest in buying one. But I wasn't that impressed by the DS either. Hopefully this will mean a drop in price for the GBA:SP and games.

Yea i was thinking about gettin a GBS:SP just because it is cheaper and has a wideeee array of awesome games for a good price. Compared to the DS which has a wideee array of... oh yea.. it has no good games.

yeah, but the DS is capable of playing old GBA games, so your collection of good GBA titles are not going to waste, you can still play them off the DS.

Also, what do you mean no good titles? Metroid Prime: Hunters, Castlevania, Advance Wars DS, blah blah are all coming out.

They're coming out. No idea how good they'll be.

The DS launch titles absolutely sucked.

the price of the psp is $300 CND which is about the same as an ipod. with the psp you can play games, listen to music and watch movies... with the release titles, you can play multiplayer games and they say they will make games that you can play online. plus it looks *really* nice and has a huge screen and amazing graphics... i dunno, but i really dont think it will fail. game boy watch out! It doesn't do the music thing nearly as well as the iPod (consider how much you'd have to invest in a Memory Stick on top of the cost of the PSP to get even a fraction of the capacity of an iPod), and there're a lot more people interested in playing music on the road than playing games in the same situation. I don't think the PSP's future can be tied to the iPod's in any way.

I thought I saw that for sale at the mall here, but uh that could just be me going crazy. It could also just be people importing things and selling them here before the American release date (Well, unless Canada has a separate date as the rest of "North America") 8D Silly Asian people.

Anyways, one of my co-workers won't shut up about the PSP. He claims he's going to get one, and tried to get me to do the same. Rolling Eyes Seeing as I don't.. really play games, he's given up for the time being.

But I still <3 Sony. But no love to the whole regions thing ><

PSP is friggin' awesome. Like ya, you think it's pretty cool when you see it in pictures, but when you actually play it, it's pretty amazing. A friend of mine had his buddy in Taiwan send one over, I don't even know the language and I love it.

300 bucks is worth it for sure, it blows DS out of the water.

As for weight, I find it actually pretty light, and battery life is pretty good, nothing that I could see detering people from buying one.

brenn wrote:

And it's very likely that you didn't. Even if it was imported, as with the one I play...it wouldn't be in english anyways, I think most people would rather wait until March, than teach themselves Japanese.

apparently the batteries last 3-10 hours depending on what youre playing.. if youre playing gt4 wirelessly with some of your friends then it will be closed to 3 hours because its more processor intesive and it has to read the discmore often. on the other hand if youre playing a simple puzzle game then it will last much longer. and the lithium ion battery takes 2 hours to fully charge!

It's a Chinese mall =) lol If I remember, I'll check again on Monday during lunch break at work XD

Three hours min. of battery life isn't bad... Ehehee, now I want one just for the heck of it 8D Does anybody know how much the games themselves would actually cost? Plus, this is probably part of Sony's plan to lower game piracy, seeing as they're supposedly the only ones who can make those UMDs.

...The idea of modded PSPs, lol

True. But I'm sure someone will come up with something.

$30 - $50 US for a game apparently.

As for a mod chip, they'd have to release UMD burners first, which I don't think is going to happen.

PSP Emulators will be cool though.

Exactly what prevents massive piracy for GameCube games. If memory serves, Nintendo not only uses less common small DVDs, but also they're read in the opposite direction all other optical media are.

Definately, although Nintendo messed up with some game and, through a software glitch, it's possible to stream games from your computer and play them through the Gamecube.

I really like the idea of encapsulated media (ie. UMD), but the weirdest thing about it is that there's no slip cover like on a floppy disk.

Although honestly, I think that Nintendo's real win in their anti-piracy effort was to release games that nobody wanted to play. Razz

Well its just MGS 1 revamped, so most people would have no urge to play it if they played the orignal on the PSX.

I would. Loved the PSX game (can you tell?) and from my buddy I've heard there's some great things about this one. If I had a gamecube, I'd totally go for it.

2 more days...

It looks like Sony's doing the right thing. The release line up is absolutely incredible (24 titles) and some of the games have been getting some really good reviews.

The only problem I can see them having is with the price. Time will tell.

What I want to see is how well the PSP stands as an mp3 player.
